MAYOR OF LYTTELTON MAKES STRONG PROTEST.
According to information receive*} today, the increased fares on the Lyttel-ton-Christchurch line -will apply to Sundays only. The present fares charged will be retained for week-days. In connection with the increase in fares, which start to-morrow, the Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr W. T. Foster, who is at present indisposed, sent the following protest to the “ Star" this morning. “On behalf of the people of Lyttelton, I wish to protest against the Railway Department’s increased fare of about 50 per cent on the Lyttelton line on Sundays. An explanation should be given by the Department why reduced fares are charged to excursionists to Arthur’s Pass and an increase made on the Lyttelton line, penalising one section of the community.”
