HARRIERS.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. The annual Temuka to Timaru road race will be held to-morrow. The complete list of entries has not come to hand, but it is understood that a record number of competitors will face the starter. Of the local clubs, the holders of the banner, Christchurch, will be the only club with a full team in the race. This club’s seventeen entries have been divided into three teams. The Baptist and Presbyterian Clubs have three men each in the race, and the Methodist Club two, while the Kaiapoi and Anglican Clubs will not be represented. Otago will be represented by two strong teams, Leith and Civil Service. J. G. Barnes, the individual winner last year, is i/r the Civil Service team, which also includes 32. C. Brown and E. L. Brown, who have many excellent performances to their credit, but who have not shown their best form this season. The Leith team includes S. A. Anderson, who secured second fastest time in the recent Port Chalmers to Dunedin road race. The rest of this team is composed of more or less unknown men, but they can be relied on to put up a fair showing. The Timaru Club’s two best men are J. Eaton and G. Broadhead, and with these two as'a foundation it should be possible for the home club to field a strong combination. The Christchurch Club has lost three members of last R. M. Barrer and it is doubtful whether R. M. Barrer will make the trip. Buvrer is under a misapprehension that read racing will spoil him for the track. He is a fine runner, but he lacks judgment in his races, and the only thing that can teach him is plenty of racing against good men. The fact that road racing- will not harm a track man is well exemplified in the splendid perform-

ances of J. G. Barnes last season. Barnes runs in every race that is held and has done so for some years, but his track form last season was the best lie has ever shown and he beat the American crack, Lee- Lermond, off 15 yards after running a wonderful mile. Many other instances could be quoted of first-class track men taking- part in races of this kind without in any way interfering with their track form. This is especially so in Otago, where every long distance runner of note is a harrier in the winter. It is stated that E. B. E: Taylor was of opinion that road racing was detrimental to a track man’s prospects of showing his best form, but Taylor never ran in a race of this description and was hardly in a position to voice an opinion. However, reverting to the Christchurch Club’s team. H. Watson and J. D. Pascoe will both do well and should place the team in a good position. It will be for those who follow to do their work to help the team to retain the championship. The team is not nearly as good as last year’s, when the club had an easy win. With so little known as to the personnel of th<? other teams, it is impossible to suggest which may be the hardest to beat, but Civil Service, Christchurch, Timaru and Leith all have good prospects. Regarding the individual championship, the holder, J. G. Barnes, will be the favourite, and he should win. Anderson should press him all the way, while A. D> Park l ar,( * Eaton and Broadhead (Timaru) should also be in the hunt.
