PERSONAL.
Ministerial. The Hon W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, arrived from the north this morning. The following Members of the Legislative Council arrived from the north by this morning's ferry steamer: Sir Heaton Rhodes, Sir James Allen, the Hon J. MacGregor, the Hon A. S. Malcolm, the Hon D. T. Fleming, the Hon R. Scott, and the Hon G. Witty. The following members of the House of Representatives arrived from the north this morning:—Messrs W. A. Bodkin, F. Waite, A. Hamilton and C. L. Carr. Messrs W. E. Reynolds and R. B. Tingey arrived in Christchurch from the north this morning. Mr S. Saunders, who is at present in a private hospital, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Mr George Gould returns to Christchurch from Wellington on Saturday morning. Dr T. A. Mac Gibbon is spending a holiday in the North Auckland district. Miss Madeline Clarke, representing E. J. Gravestock, Ltd., arrived in Christchurch this morning to arrange for the coming Backhaus season. Messrs F. Morley and A. H. Johnston, Wellington, are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Messrs C. B. Norwood (Wellington), B. J. Burton and T. M. Webb (Auckland) are staying at the United Service Hotel.
The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) and the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) left for the south this morning. They will represent the city at the funeral of the late Sir Joseph Ward at. Bluff m Sunday.
The Bishop of Aotea-roa is still an nmate of the Rotorua Hospital, but he is now recovering well from his operation and is hopeful of leaving hospital in a week or so. It is his intention, on his recover}', to spend a holiday in Rarotonga. Mr E. S. Brittenden, railway outdoor assistant district traffic manager, Dunedin, has been appointed stationmaster at Christchurch in succession to Mr H. D. Lowry. Mr W. A. Marshall, of the staff of the head office, Wellington, has been appointed stationmaster at Timaru.
Mr G. N. Goldie, well known in sporting circles in Wellington, has retired after 32 years’ association with the firm of Ferguson and Osborn. He is an honorary life member of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association and was honorary secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association from 1903 until 1921.
Mr F. W. Johnston, who has recently recovered from an illness, was welcomed upon taking his seat again as a member of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League last night. The following members of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League were elected to committees at the meeting last night:—Tourist and Publicity Committee, Mr W. J. Boyce; highways, Mr W. K. M’Alpine; agriculture, Mr R. T. M’Millan. With these additions the committees for the previous year were re-elected. “On July 3, Mr T. Jeal completed twenty-five years’ service with the South Waimakariri River Board, and the Waimakariri River Trust,” reported the Resident Engineer (Mr C. W. Harris) to the meeting of the Trust yesterday afternoon; “and to mark the occasion a small presentation was made to him at a function held at the works office on that evening.” Under the new policy of offering appointments in the Colonial service to young men in the Dominions, Mr Ronald O. Sinclair, LL.M., of Auckland, has been selected, states a Press Association telegram. He has been designated for a post in West Africa. The appointment is the first received by a New Zealander, under the policy recently inaugurated. His father is the Rev W. A. Sinclair, General Secretary of the New Zealand Methodist Foreign Missionary Society.
