LARGER FIGURES ARE TO BE USE?.

FIRE BRIGADE NUMBERS IN ’PHONE DIRECTORY.

The size of type ttsed for the fire brigade entries in the telephone directory was referred to at the meeting of the Christchurch Fire Board last night, when consideration was being given to a letter from the District Telegraph Engineer in answer to a request from the board that the fire brigade entries should be given greater prominence. The letter sent by the board referred to complaints that had been received of difficulty in finding the brigade’s number in cases of emergency, and asked that the entry on the yellow page in the front of the book should be printed in larger type and that the alphabetical entry should be printed in block type. The District Telegraph Engineer stated that he had forwarded the request to the head office and had received a reply that it was considered that the fire brigade entries in the front of the directory were sufficiently conspicuous at present. There was no objection to larger type being used in the alphabetical list but if so the fire authority would have to pay for it. The secretary (Mr C. J. Treleaven) stated that he had written to the printers of the directory. They charged £2 per annum for each alphabetical entry in larger type.

After some discussion it was resolv ed to have the name of the Central Fire Station printed in block type.
