BARNES RUNS WELL IN HARRIER EVENT.

(Special to the “Star.”) DUNEDIN, June 30 The Port Chalmers to Dunedin road race, over a course of approximately eight miles, is recognised as one of th< most important events of the year in Dunedin, and for Saturday’s race ther. were no fewer than 58 starters, the fielc being one of the most representative for some years, including such men a. c J. G. Barnes (former Otago cross country and present holder of the Canterbury cross-country and one and three-mile titles), J. W. Tapp and E. L Brown (both ex-New Zealand cham pions across country), and C. E. Birt and T. Chettelburgh (former winners of the race). The course was in fair order, bu several long stretches of gravel proved most trying to the competitors, severs of whom were showing the effects ove: the last two miles. It is pleasing to record, however, that 56 of the starters completed the course. 1

The winner turned up in S. A. Anderson, a promising young member of th© Leith Club, who was sixth in the recent Edmond Cup race. He is barely nineteen years of age, but already has some fine performances to his credit. To-day,- he ran off the Imin mark, and, going an excellently-judged race, held the lead with about a mile and a half to go, increasing it to win by sixty yards in the exceptionally good time of 4lmin 32sec.

Another young runner in C. F. Watson filled second place, after being in a handy position all the way, and third place went to yet another young performer in J. W. RL’Stay. The ex-Canterbury man, J. G. Barnes, signalised his reappearance in Otago athletics by finishing in seventh place from the scratch mark and putting up fastest time (41min 14sec), which represented one of the best performances ever put up on the Port Road.

Barnes ran with great dash all the way and finished with a wonderful burst of speed. With Lovelock, Barnes, and Morris competing, there should be a wonderful race in the Otago cross-country championship. Caversham holds a big lead in the contest for the Nickels Cup, which is awarded for the Port and Modified Marathon road races.
