ALHAMBRA LEADING IN DUNEDIN RUGBY

LINDSAY'S GOAL-KICKING BOOSTS VARSITY SCORE B (Special to the “Star.”) DUNEDIN, June 30. After an interruption for two weeks by the games with the British team, club football was resumed in Dunedin on Saturday and, considering the fact that most players had been on the bank for those two Saturdays, the play was of a very satisfactory standard, some of the teams’ movements showing a desire to emulate the open game which the British team plav. The competition, the first round of which will be completed next Satur day, is at a decidedly interesting stage and it is still not easy to pick the win ning team Alhambra, which has 11 flag points, lead Kaikorai, with 13 points; Pirates, with 12 points: Varsity B, with 10 points; and Southern, with 9 points. The Varsity A team are sixth in the competition, the lowest they have been for years, but the students’ combination is improving in each game and they are likely to upset some of the leading teams at any time. A Win for Kaikorai. . The principal match of the day on Saturday was that between Kaikorai and Pirates, which provided a close game, Kaikorai eventually winning by 9 to 6. Each side kicked a goal from a free kick, and Kaikorai scored two tries as compared with the opposing side's one. There was little between the teams for the greater part of the game,,, but Kaikorai stood the pace better and asserted their superiority in the last twenty minutes, particularly in the forwards. Both sides handled the hall fairly well, though good tackling by both teams generally brought up such efforts. The three tries of the game were excellent ones, all gained as the result of penetrating runs by inside men. Giles, the Pirates’ second five-eighths, gave an excellent display in that position, while his vis-a-vis in the Kaikorai team, Barber, was also prominent. Ross, the Kaikorai centre, was a sound player and should easily find a place in the representative team

One of Kaikorai’s tries followed a movement in which Barber received m forward pass, which the referee was not in a position to see. However on the day Kaikorai were slightly the better team, their forwards, well led by

Sonntag, having more dash than those of the opposition. Students’ Improved Combination. Excellent handling of the ball was shown by Varsity A, which, in defeating Dunedin by 28 to 9. displayed better combination than in previous games this year. Six tries, some of a spectacular nature, were scored by the students, and Lindsay showed his skill as a kicker by converting five out of the six. Other Games. Varsity B scored an eleventh-hour win against Taieri on the latter team’s home ground at Mosgiel. With two minutes to go, Taieri led by 11 to 8, but attacking with great pace, the Students scored at the corner, and Strang converted with a jreat kick to maLe Varsity B the winning side by 13 to 11. A greatly improved Zingari side made Southern battle hard for victory by 8 to 5. In this match Hore played an outstanding game for Southern. Alhambra, the leading team of the competition, had little difficulty in defeating a weak Union team by 26 to 7. How the Teams Stand. The following table shows the relative positions of the teams: — Points. Ch.

The two Varsity teams will meet this week in their match of the first round. Though the B team are ahead of the A team, it is likely that the latter will win owing to their marked improvement recently.
