STOLE FROM SHOP TILL; REMANDED FOR SENTENCE

A man-hunt in the city streets last evening had a sequel in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Milton George Elliott, aged twenty-three, an engineer, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing the sum of £2 11s 6d. the property of Mrs I. K. Marsden, who ketps a shop at 194 Armagh Street. The accused was remanded for sentence until next Tuesday. The police stated that they wished to make further inquiries. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said that the offence took place at 5 p.m. yesterday. The accused went into the shop and was found by the owner behind the counter at the till. Accused ran out of the shop along Armagh and Manchester Streets, and into Gloucester Street. lie ran into two motor garages and finally was intercepted by a taxi driver and held. In giving her version of the affair Mrs Marsden said that she was having tea in a back room at about 5 p.ru., when a lady who was staying with her said that there was somebody in the shop. Mrs Marsden had heard nothing but went into the shop. On entering it she came face to face with a young man who was behind the counter and had come from the direction of the till. “ The man said that he had been out of work for some time,” said Mrs Marsden, “ and commenced to sidle past me When he got to the door of the shop he began to run I rushed after him shouting ‘stop him! ’ Nobody then seemed to take any notice, but when I r 'houted ‘Police! ’ onlookers joined in *he chase.” Some men were at work in the Do minion when he ru-hed in with n cr-wd shouting twenty yards in his "ear. “We grabbed him.” said one of the employees, “ and he asked us to let him go. We said, ‘ We’ll let you go! * and sent for a constable.”
