LICENSED VICTUALLERS HOLD ANNUAL BALL.
Hung with myriads of gold and black streamers (the association’s colours) and intertwinings of lycopodium, the Caledonian Hall made a pretty background for the dainty frocks worn at the annual ball of the Canterbury Licensed Victuallers’ Association, held there last evening. Always a great success, this function was again most popular this year, nearly three hundred people being present. Credit is due to the following committee for their untiring efforts:—Messrs R. Nash (president of the association), J. C. Wallace, T. Aspell, H. F. Anderson, A. Barrett, J. L. Bennet, J. Bisman, W. J. Blake, J. M. Coffey, N. L. Field, J. Griffin, T Hampson, A. J. Lambert. H. A. Nickolls, W. M. Nidd, C. Piper, T. Quirk, J. C. Rex, 11. Robinson, W. A. Stapleton and J. O. M’Gillivray (secretary). The supper.-room was prettily decorated, the tables looking most attractive with vases of pink daisies and autumn foliage—a bright note being the gay bon-bons at each place. Two bands were in attendance and played alternately—the Bailey-Marston Orchestra and Blogg’s Band. The Mayor of Christchurch (the Rev J. K. Archer) and Mrs Archer and Mr and Mrs J. S. Neville were the guests of honour. Mrs Richard Nash, wife of the president, wore a handsome frock of gold lace inset with flower motifs in green, mauve, lemon and rose and ciel blue true lovers’ knots, and a nocturne blue panne velvet cape with rolled corded collar.
