SEA VIEW ROAD BRIDGE. It is understood that at a conference between Mr H. F. Toogood, consulting engineer, and members of the council the tender for the Sea View Road Bridge has been chosen on the engineer’s advice, and will be let when the. warrant from the Government arrives authorising the erection of the bridge. HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETING. The annual meeting of New Brighton householders was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening. Mr F. D. Muirson presided. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £35 6s 7d. The chairman explained that the committee would not have had such a large credit balance but for the fact that a subsidy had been received recently from the Education Board. The question of a free kindergarten for New Brighton was discussed, and it was decided to recommend to the incoming committee that they should continue their efforts to have one established. GOLF. A meeting of the Rawhiti Golf Club was held on Monday evening, Mr H. Throp presiding. The secretary, Mr H. E. Elliott, reported that the affiliation papers for the club had been forwarded. It was decided to get into touch with other clubs to make arrangements for inter-club competitions. Thirty new members were elected, making the membership of the club approximately sixty. Mr H. E. Elliott, secretary of the Municipal Links and Rawhiti Golf Club, has been appointed secretary of the North Auckland Hospital Board, and will be leaving New Brighton early next week. PUBLIC LIBRARY. The annual meeting of the New Brighton Public Library was held on Wednesday evening. Mr R. Lightbody presided. The annual report and bal-ance-sheet showed that the library had had a successful year. Four hundred and twenty-seven books had been added during the year, and 180 had been discarded. The membership stood at 163. Thanks were due to the ladies of the committee for repairing damaged books. There was a credit balance of £4 IDs 9d. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr R. Lightbody; committee. Dr Glasgow, Messrs G. W. Bishop, T. Joynt, J. D. Browne, A. B. Grant, Mesdames C. Hockley, A. Dey, A. Treleaven, J. Bellamy and F. J. Bromley; secretary and treasurer, Mr F. J. Bromley; auditor, Mr T. Joynt; buying committee, Mrs C Hockley and Mr J. D. Browne. The question of censoring books which were placed in the library caused considerable discussion. Mr Grant criticised the action of the committee in withdrawing certain books from circulation. In his opinion the censoring of books in the library had been very detrimental to the membership roll. The chairman and Mrs Dey were appointed as a committee to censor books, W.E.A. A very interesting lecture was delivered in the schoolroom on Monday evening by Mr G. Manning, M.A., on “ The Development of the First Colonial Policy.” There was a good attendance, many of last year’s students being present. CROQUET. The New Brighton Croquet Club held its weekly whist drive on Thursday last. Mrs W. Cooke was hostess. Prizes were won by Mr E. Tillevshort and Mr F. Blunt. \ Y.P.C.T.U. The fortnightly meeting of the West End Y branch was held in the Presbyterian B.C . rooms on Monday, Miss D. Hooker presiding. An invitation was received and accepted from the central Y branch to a social on May 9. Mr M’Cree was elected Parliamentarian. After the business had been concluded the evening was spent in games. COMING OF AGE PARTY. Mr and Mrs R. Campbell, of Scott Street, South Brighton, entertained about 130 guests in the South Brighton Hall on April 19, the occasion being the twenty-first birthday of their }roungest son (Roy). The hall was decorated with streamers, and after dancing in the early part of the evening supper was served. Various toasts were honoured. After supper musical items were rendered by Mr J. Beasley and Mr W.

Marsden. Music was supplied by Mr R. Campbell’s orchestra, and Messrs Reg Campbell and H. Field were M.C.’s. SOUTH BRIGHTON SURF CLUB. In connection with the beach carnival held by the South Brighton Surf Club on Easter Monday it is expected to realise approximately £6O. NORTH BEACH NOTES. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The householders’ meeting last Monday evening was one of the liveliest ever held in North Beach. Mr E. A. M. Leaver was chairman. Trouble arose when Mr Burley asked for the return of the last proficiency examination. The chairman stated that he could not supply the information asked for, but that it had been made public at the prize giving ceremony. Later on Mr Burley asked if the fuel for use at the school was supplied by a member of the committee. The chairman replied that it had always been supplied by a local merchant who was a member of the committee. Mr Peverell stated that no member of the committee had any right to supply the school, and quoted from the Education Act in support of his contention. The chairman admitted that he was not aware of any such restriction on a member of the school committee. It was a common practice and he believed that the North Beach Committee had received good value for its money. The School Committee Association’s remit suggesting that teaching of swimming and life saving should be made compulsory in schools was recevied with enthusiasm. At the conclusion of the meeting a vote of thanks was passed to the retiring members of the committee, particularly to Mrs Goring and the chairman. The question of the school colours for sports and a school uniform was raised by Mr Freeborn, who moved that the previous meeting’s decision be given effect to. It was explained that the colours were black, red, and white, a black cap with red and white monogram and black stockings with red and white tops. AMALGAMATION WITH GREATER CHRISTCHURCH. At the last meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council the following resolution was carried on the motion of Councillor E. Smith, seconded by Councillor A. E. Lawry:—That a sub-committee consisting of his Worship the Mayor, Councillors F. D. Muirson, G. W. Bishop, E. A. M. Leaver and E. L. Smith be appointed to go into the matter of amalgamtion with j Greater Christchurch. NEW BRIGHTON BAND. The monthly meeting of the New Brighton Municipal Band Committee and representatives of the New Brighton Borough Council was held in the band hall. Councillor Leaver presiding. Councillor A. E. Lawry complimented the band on its splendid parade in connection with the Anzac service at New Brighton. The Mayor endorsed the remarks of Councillor Lawry, and stated that he had expressed his appreciation in a letter to Conductor Nuttall. It was decided to recommend the band to give a Sunday night concert after church service in aid of the unemployment fund. The interior of the band hall being nearly completed it is the intention of the band to hold a social to officially open the hall. ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL. The North Beach and Waimairi Progress League will celebrate its eighteen aniversary by a social, card party and dance in the Peace Memorial Hall on Saturday evening. The first meeting was held on May 3, 1911, in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, those present being Messrs J. H. Coates (chairman), H. R. Wade, F. Butler, A. Duggan, H. Wagstaff, A. H. Jones, A. T. Woolmer, E. A. M. Leaver (secretary), and Dr Neeley. RACECOURSE ROAD. This road badly needs repairs, especially about midway between River Road to Rookwood Avenue. At the last meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council, on the motion of Councillor Leaver, it was decided to ask the Waimairi County Council to approach the _ Highways Board with a view to having the North Beach bus route declared a subsidiary highway. This would include Racecourse Road. TRIPLE CHUTE. % The chute on the foreshore at North Beach has been taken down for the winter and will be repaired prior to reerection. PERSONAL. Mr W. E. Leverett has returned from a brief holiday at Sumner. Mrs H. Jones, of Hastings, who has been staying at North Beach, returned north on Thursday. Mr Colin E.
