COUNCIL HOLDS OVER NOTICE OF MOTION,

Because of the receipt by the Mayor of what he described as an important communication affecting the whole question of the site of the former municipal market, the following notice of motion by Councillor H. T. J. Thacker was held over at last evening’s meeting of the City Council“ That the owner of the section in Worcester Street, formerly used as a municipal market, be given twenty-eight days’ notice to remove the buildings erected on the section, which are not in accordance with the city by-laws.”-The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) suggested that Councillor Thacker should hold over the question for consideration by the Finance Committee, for a communication involving the whole question had been received. Councillor Thacker said he made an election pledge, and considered the building was an eyesore. He would be pleased to hold over the question, but if the section came back to the city all the tawdry buildings would have to come down. The Mayor said that the notice of motion, in his opinion, was impracticable. As far as he could see the council had no right to order the removal of the buildings: all that it could do was to order that they be brought within the provisions of the by-laws. Councillor Thacker was given permission to hold over his motion.
