Mr Howard Pleased At Samoan Comment.
To the Editor. Dear Sir, —Would you permit me to congratulate you for your leading article in Saturday g issue on the above subject? vou are big enough to admit that we have pursued the wrong policy in those islands, lam one of those who believe that we have a great record in connection with the natives in this country, and I have never lost hope that so soon as the people realised that we were not being fair to the Samoans we should alter our ways. Without any evil intention we have blundered. The wrong will never be undone until we repeal the 1927 Samoan Amendment Act. In that Act we give the Administrator the power to arrest and deport without trial. That is not a British way of doing things. It is an insult to a proud people, and I sincerely hope that Mr Cobbe has got the power conferred upqn him to promise its repeal. However, lam not going to pour petrol on what I hope is a dying flame by reciting the wrongs we have been guilty of. I join whole-heartedly with you, sir, in hoping the trouble is nearing it* end.—Sincerely, E. J. HOWARD.
