CONSTRUCTION OF MAIN TRUNK LINE.

WORK AT PARNASSUS WILL START TO-MORROW.

The first batch of men engaged by the Public Works Department for work on the construction of the South Island Main Trunk railway line at the southern (Parnassus) end left this morning for Parnassus. They will start work to-morrow morning on opening up cuttings over a distance of several miles of the section between Parnassus and the mouth of the Conway River. A further batch of twenty-five men, making a total of fifty, will leave for Parnassus on Wednesday, but the placing of further men on the railway works is dependent on instructions from the head office of the Public Works Department. Camps have already been prepared for the men already engaged, but if the number of men is to be greatly increased additional accommodation will need to be provided.
