FAMILY NARROWLY ESCAPE DROWNING.

BOAT CAPSIZES IN MANAWATU RIVER. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N., February 3. T. Downing and his wife and three children, aged sixteen, nine and five, had a narrow escape from drowning in the Manawatu River yesterday afternoon. They were rowing in a flat-bot-tomed boat when one of the oars broke, the boat drifted on to a submerged snag and filled rapidly. The occupants scrambled on to the snag, being finally rescued by means of a rope and raft. Mrs Downing was in the water for two hours before being safely landed on the bank. .
