PORT OR ESTUARY.

To the Editor. Dear Sir,—ln further reply to comments on the procedure adopted by “Wider Outlook” in his reply to mine of January 27 re the Estuary, I think for evasion of the broad question he takes the cake. What has his question to do with the question as to whether Lyttelton or the Estuary should be our port? By accusing others of snapping up the whole of the Estuary foreshore he practically admits there is every possibility of its becoming the port of Canterbury, and he is sore at having missed securing a slice of it and is now acting the dog in the manger, so that others shall not reap the benefit of their foresight. If that is so, what a poor way of seeking redress. Is he not aware that it was by such foresight our city attained its present proud position of wealth, and none should grudge it to those who, by such foresight benefited. Again, I would like to ask “Wider Outlook” to lose sight of self in a matter of such importance to Canterbury and confine himself to the question of what is for the greater future of the province—the present port at Lyttelton or a central port on the Estuary? Never mind the opinions of the past generation. Let us get the opinions of the present day engineers. Again I repeat, if those opinions are in favour of the Estuary (which I firmly believe will be so) then why waste more money on Lyttelton? In conclusion, let me advise “Wider Outlook” that should the Estuary be the chosen spot, I will be prepared to hand over free of cost to the City of Christchurch all my vested interests in the foreshore of the Estuary.—l am, etc., ONWARD.
