CAR GETS BOGGED AT MT. PLEASANT.
ROAD NOW IN VERY BAD CONDITION. A passenger by the ferry steamer on Friday morning was the subject of an unexpected holiday experience near the top of Mount Pleasant. He had travelled from Taranaki by motor to Wellington with a party of friends, and after unloading the car at Lyttelton, made his way towards Christchurch. Arriving at the top of Evans Pass, he noticed the direction board, to Christchurch via Mount Pleasant, and, knowing no better, took the turning to the left instead of coming down to Sumner. He was very soon in trouble. The heavy rains had damaged the road considerably, and those portions which have been very rough for two years now, he found in a bad state. He finally arrived at the site of a spring which flows from a patch of bush below the summit, about a mile and a half from the Mount Pleasant tea-rooms. Here a slip had fallen partly over the road, leaving insufficient room for the car to pass. He got partly through this, but stuck firmly in the partly-drained and sticky slush.' To make matters more serious, he himself was convalescent after a serious internal operation, and finally a lady member of the party had to find her way into Sumner. She secured the assistance of Mr C. Bowman, who motored to the car, which by this time was bogged up to the back axle. After some hours’ delay the party continued on its journey, and enjoyed the splendid views obtained from the mountain road. This road is now, unfortunately, in a very neglected state. It was re-formed and repaired some seven years ago at the personal expense of Mr G. Humphreys, with the assistance of a Government subsidy.
