HIGH SCHOOL MEET AUCKLAND GRAMMAR. MATCH FOR SHIELD CONTINUED TO-DAY. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, December 17. There was a marked change in the conditions at Eden Park to-day when the match between Auckland Grammar School and Christchurch Boys’ High School, for the Heathcote \\ llliams Shield, entered upon its second stage. Rain during the early hours had affected the wicket just sufficiently to hep the bowlers, and the breeze had increased, blowing almost directly across the wicket. Overnight Auckland haa lost one wicket in compiling 28 in response to Christchurch’s score of o7x The match was resumed at 9.JU, Tessup (17) and Dixon (0) facing Hounsell from the pavilion end and Jamie son from the Kingsland crease, Houa sell was turning slightly from the off and commanded a good deal of respect, his first over yielding only one run, a single to Jessup to fine leg. The satre batsman got Jamieson prettily away lor a couple past point, but the rate oi scoring was slow. „ A leg-trap field was set for Hounse.l s bowling, with Parsons close up at siry mid-on, and Jamieson corresponding y close to the batsman on the opposite flank, a somewhat intimidating formation. Nothing daunted, however, the batsmen soon got into their stride, ana the score advanced rapidly, Jessup bringing up the half-century with a bonnie shot through the gully. Immediately afterwards he appeared to be caught at second slip, but the appeal was disallowed. A double bowling change was tried, Cobden and Parsons being given a turn, but the batsmen continued to progress, mainly by singles. Dixon was caught off a no-ball when the score was 87 Dawson replaced Cobden and sent up seductive slows with an. occasional googly, but the batsmen took no risks, and the score had been carried from 28 to 96 when the first wicket of the day fell, Dixon being well taken at square leg. The century was hoisted after the innings had been in progress nearly two hours, Jessup making a crisp drive to the off. Joined by Harris, Jessup continued to bat in stylish and attractive fashion, and his partner, after a cautious beginning, evoked cheers by a two past mid-on and a rousing four to the leg boundary, both at Dawson’s expense. The partnership had added 24 when Jes Sup put one up to silly midoff and was- easily caught. Hounsell, bowling from the Kingsland end, was keeping an excellent length and turning the ball just enough to be dangerous. He earned the reward of some steady work when he secured the wickets of Harris and Howard in successive overs, both batsmen succumbing to balls which kept low. He had bowled twenty-four overs, his two wickets costing him 43 runs. Six wickets were down for 160. Two more wickets fell for the addition of only two more runs, Hamilton being caught at mid-on and Robinson falling to a simple catch. The successes gave Hounsell the excellent morning analysis of four for 43. At the lunch interval the score was 162 for eight. Auckland were dismissed for 173, and followed on. Although lacking in inches, he possessed a strong drive, while the timing of his leg shots was excellent. He also scored many boundaries with a strong pull shot. Only one chance marred his display, a difficult catch to silly square leg early in the innings. Brittenden, who opened with Fisher, was also responsible for a sparkling display, his runs being made at a fairly fast rate. ELIMINATION MATCH. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, December 17. In the Hawke Cup elimination match Wanganui at lunch had lost six wickets for 235 in their second innings. They still require 232 to win.
