AMBULANCE BAZAAR.
A bazaar, in aid of the building fund of the St John Ambulance Brigade, was held in the Orange Hall, Worcester Street, yesterday afternoon and evening, and was opened by Mr H. T. Armstrong, M.P., and Air E. J. Howard, AI.P., who were welcomed by Dr Borrie, and shown round the many stalls laden with attractive and saleable goods specially suitable for Christmas presents, at “bargain prices.” Air Armstrong said he considered it an honour to officiate at so important a function. Anything which was for the betterment of the Ambulance Brigade was a most worthy object, for they rendered wonderful service to the community. As the population increased and new industries were developed, the work of the brigades became more necessary, because of the greater likelihood of accidents. He had lately noticed the great efficiency of the Ambulance Association in Australia, and had seen two serio-us accidents, when, with marvellous quickness, the ambulance was on the scene and first aid rendered, and the patients taken to the hospital. In all the Australian States, the people enthusiastically supported the association. He would not say that ambulance work was any better there, but the brigades were far better equipped, and of course that made for greater efficiency. He hoped that in Christchurch ambulance work would be properly appreciated. Alany valuable lives were saved by “ first aid,” and medical men gave much of their valuable time to training young men and women, to enable them to take it up. He had much pleasure in declaring the bazaar open. Air Howard congratulated the members of the various brigades on their beautfiul display and hoped that, even if the amount required, £2500, was not forthcoming immediately, the sale would realise a large sum towards it, and he wished them all success. Dr and Miss Borrie afterwards entertained Mr Armstrong, Mr Howard and Airs Bishop at tea, in an adjoining room, where the long tables were gay with flowers. The bazaar will be open this afternoon and evening, and there will be many new attractions. The following are the stalls and stallholders - Work Stall and ll£d Stall—Christchurch and Beckenham Nursing Division. Tea Rooms—Girl Guides’ Nursing Division. Flower Stall—Selwyn Nursing Division.
