Mr and Mrs J. H. Phillips (Western Australia) are guests at the Clarendon Hotel.

Mrs Gowing and the Misses Lance are leaving to-day for their cottage on the Leithfield beach.

Mrs F. L. Roberts, of Surrey, England, is making her home at Sumner, with her brother, Mr A. R. Galbraith. Miss N. Copsey has been appointed resident home science mistress at the Christchurch Technical College. Mr and Mrs J. H. Pitt arrived from Auckland this morning and are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs Sholto Douglas motored back to Ethelton after spending a few days in town. Mr and Mrs Philips, who have been visiting New Zealand, left for Western Australia to-day. Mrs J. B. Borthwick, who has been the guest of Mrs Flower, Kaikoura, has returned to Christchurch. Miss Marjorie Sheridan will arrive in Christchurch next week from Svdney, and will be the guest of her cousin, Mrs Cyril Ward. Miss E. Browne has resigned from the position of part-time commercial teacher at the Christchurch Technical College. Mrs J. D. Mitchell (Invercargill), and Mr and Mrs M. E. Thomas (Timaru) are quests at the United Service Hotel. Miss Bessie Macdonald will hold her students' dance recital next Saturday and Monday, December 14 and 16. This recital is always one of the most popular of its kind, and the programme this year is the best Miss Macdonald has yet offered. The fifteenth birthday of Miss Thelma Eleanor Anning was celebrated yesterday at 59, Ward Street, Addington. She was the recipient of many presents. Those present were: Messrs F. Reed, L. Corbett, W. Macdonald, H. Longdin, R. French and M. Clark; Misses Edna, Winifred and Vera Anning and W. Sampson. A garden party, organised by the North Canterbury District Women’s Christian Temperance Union, will be held at the residence of Mrs T. E. Taylor, 63, Dyer’s Pass Road, Cashmere Hills, on Saturday afternoon next. There will be attractive goods for sale on the stalls, and side-shows and amusements. The funds will go to the Youth and Forward Movements. The friends of Mrs F. M’Donald, of Kaitangata, will be grieved to learn of her death, which occurred suddenlj’in Ashburton at the residence of her son, Mr H. M’Donald. Mrs M’Donald, who was the wife of the Rev F M’Donald, had spent 'many years in various districts of the North Island, where she was universally respected and esteemed. Of a generous, kindly and unselfish character, she was loved by all who knew her and her loss will be mourned by a wide circle of friends. The late Mrs M’Donald leaves three sisters and one brother, Mrs Land (New Plymouth), Mesdames Moorhouse and M’Cracken (Christchurch), and Mr H. P. Crysell (Wanganui). The Addington Burgesses’ Association held another successful social and dance in the Selwyn Street Hall last Thursday evening. There was a large attendance. The prize-winners for the novelty dances were: Monte Carlo, Miss Latham and Mr W. Latham; Tasmanian, Miss M. Reed and Mr F. Burns; fox-trot, Mrs Anderson and Mr M. Clark; two-step, Mrs Osborne and Mrs C. Philpott; lucky spots, Miss Pounsford and Mr W. Charlton, Miss W. Anning and Mr L. Corbett, and Miss V. Anning and Mr F. Reed. An enjoyable evening was spent at Maunsell Street, Woolston, recently, when Miss Edith Archer, who is to be married next month to Mr Ted Timms, was the guest of honour at a kitchen * evening arranged by Miss E. The decorations were black and gold streamers and balloons, and the beautiful cake, which was made by his grandmother, had twenty-one candles. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr W. King. Games, competitions and dancing helped to pass a pleasant evening, the competitions being worn by Miss Farrant and Mr Lyall, Miss K. Doyle and L. Farrant, Mrs Farrant and Mr Smart. The evening was brought to a close by the singing of “ For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” The annual meeting of the Sydenham W.C.T.U. was held in the Baptist Schoolroom, Colombo Street, last Thursday. Airs Gilmour presided over a large attendance of members. Letters were read from the Willard Home, thanking the union for donation, and from the Dominion president, relating to the garden party on December 14. Reports of the officers were read and adopted, and proved satisfactory. Mrs Greenway sang a solo, and Airs Winter gave a recitation. One new member was initiated. Afternoon tea was served. Mrs Richards (district president) took the chair for the election of officers.
