CHAUFFEUR NOT TO BE ENGAGED FOR MAYOR'S CAR.

traffic department WILL PROVIDE DRIVERS.

When the City Council decided to purchase a motor-car for the use of the Mayor on official business connected with the city, it was intended that a special chauffeur should be engaged to drive it and also to look after the other cars used by the council. On inquiries being made to-day, it was ascertained that it is not now intended to engage a chauffeur for the Mayoral car, satisfactory arrangements having been made with the Traffic Department for a driver to be whenever required. Since delivery was made the Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) has himself driven the car on a number of occasions, bur he stated to *■ y that he did not to make a practice of driving it. A number of applications for the position of chauffeur have been received by the council, but, according to the present arrangemeuts, no appointment is to be made.
