SETTLERS COMPZ.AZ2T. ASHBURTON, December 6. A deputation representing the settlers of the soldier settlement at Isleworth waited on the County Council at its meeting to-day, and asked for suitable drainage. One farmer stated that the land had sunk eighteen inches in one year on account of cultivation and water lying for long periods. For six months of the year the land was a bog, and useless for stock. The chairman stated that the settlers had the sympathy of the Council. He could not understand any Government putting men on such land, and expect them to make a “do of it.” Other members referred to the position of the settlers as cruel.
