RACING NOTES. Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting will close at five o’clock this evening. * * * * General entries fdr the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting are due at five o’clock this evening. * * * for the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting will close at nine o’clock to-night. Hs * * * Nominations for the Wairarapa Racing Club’s summer meeting will close at eight o’clock to-night. * * * He The first at Ashburton to-mor-row will be started at 1 pjn., and the concluding event is timed for 4.45 pm. • * * * In connection with the Ashburton County Racing Club's meeting to-mor-row, a special train will leave Christchurch at 10.35 a.m. and will arrive at the racecourse siding at 12.15 p.m. The return train will leave at 5.20 p.m. and is due in Christchurch at 7.0 p.m. * * * * The fields engaged at Ashburton tomorrow are much larger than usual, and the meeting should be one of the most successful held by the club in recent years. * * * * Malmsey has gone on well lately and she should show up prominently in the Tinwald Handicap. * * * * The three-year-old. Night Lad, was very much in the boom at the commencement of the season. So far he has not been a winner, but he has run well enough to suggest that he will soon break the spell. With good handling he should run out a mile and a quarter all right. . • * * * Chickwheat has on more than one occasion shown a partiality for the Ashburton -course, where he has a good record in mile and a quarter races. His recent track work suggests an early return to winning form. * * * * The four-year-old Last Mark, who is engaged in the Winchmore Hack Handicap, .showed moderate form in most of his starts in the North Island last season. He ran his best races in the winter, being second to Glyn Dhu at Napier Park and then winning at Trentham. on each occasion in heavy ground. * * * * Phastar has improved in appearance since last season and as he has been galloping well lately he may soon display better form in public. * ale * * Punchestown should play a prominent part in the Winchmore Hack Handicap. He ran second to Dutch Money over the same ground in the spring. The Riccarton two-year-old Sleipner is a very speedy youngster, and he will -et his older opponents a stiff task in the Lagmhor Plate. With average luck he is certain to be well placed in the early stages, and the onlv doubt is his ability to stay on to the end of flv furlongs. A gallop this week, however gave the impression of improved stamina.
Dutch Money* has plenty of speed, and she looks better class than most of her opponents in the Moreton Hack Handicap. The final furlong will be her greatest trouble. C. Emerson will be her rider. - * * , * * Te Awhina has been working exceptionally well of late. She ran out seven furlongs in great style one morning this week, and she should be seen to advantage in the M&reton Hack Handicap. ■* * * * The Viscount has not raced up to expectations for some time, but he looks very well at present, and before loqg he may show improved form. * * * sic Ranelagh is a promising hack, who has shown that he can run six furlongs in good style. In the meantime, however, he must be taken on trust at a mile, which may be a trifle too far for him at present. * * * * Courtlike, who is engaged in the Wakanui Handicap, has not had a race this season, but she has been galloping well lately, while some of her two-year-old form was attractive. * * * * Solgele will take on open sprint company at Ashburton. The class is not good, however, and in hi-, improved form he should be hard to beat. * * * He Arrowmir is a brilliant galloper, who would win plenty of races if he could be relied on to repeat his best track form. His running at Ashburton will be of interest, as he will be making his first appearance after a change of quarters. The brood mare Nada, by Rokeby* from Temba, with a colt foal by \\ eathervane, has . been purchased by Mr R. Gordon from Mr J. Reid, the sale being effected by Wright, Stephenson and Co.. Ltd. W. Stone has Silver Paper and Aspiring at Trenthfun at present. lie has no intention of making his permanent headquarters there, as was suggested earlier in the week, but he proposes to remain there for a time, as the pair named will do their holiday racing in the North Island. Aspiring will be a competitor at Woodville next month. She and Silver Paper may go to Auckland but they will be nominated also for the Manawatu meeting Silver Paper did not do well on the trip to Feilding, while the small course was against him, but he is reported to be in excellent health for holiday engagements. The three-year old. Lord Thomond, another of Stone’ c team, is going on nicely and Tie may be raced at the Wairarapa meeting.
Northern reports state that Star Stranger. Corinax, Paquito and Pegawav are the popular fancies for the Auckland Cup, with a preference for Star Stranger. In the Railway Handicap, Lady Quex is a clear cut favourite. Hs H* ifc sfc Prodice made a further good addition to her record when she won the Alison Cup at the Takapuna meeting.' the winner’s portion of the stake attached to that race being £450. Up to the present Prodice has won prizemoney to the amount of £6250. and she has proved a good speculation to the Te Awamutu trainer; F. E. Loomb, who bought her when a yearling for 500 guineas. sjs * * By winding both races that he contested at the Takapuna meeting, Leitrim showed himself up attractively, and he stands out as one of the most improved gallopers seen out this season. Leitrim begins very* fast and that has assisted him to a large extent in his recent successes. Although he did not beat a strong field in the Cautley Handicap, his effort in that race points to him being hard to beat in the future. * Sjt 5): Hi The explanation of Duellona’s gunning on the first day at Takapuna, as elicited at the judicial inquiry, was that she got caught in the tapes and did not afterwards race kindly. * # ?je * Good fortune in getting away well from an indifferent start enabled Corinax to escape all the trouble in the Qarly stages of the St Andrew’s Handicap, at Takapuna, which was a rough race, and this materially assisted in his victory, says a northern writer. Luck was undoubtedly on his side, but one could not help being impressed by the manner in which he was staying on at the finish, and it is evident that he is going to be at the top of his form to tackle the Auckland Cup at the end of the month. Corinax won that race last year, and he might again succeed this year. Admitting that Corinax ran disappointingly in the Alison Cup, the pronounced neglect of his prospects in his second race at the North Shore ground was a pointed surprise, and fur nished an illustration of how quickly a horse can at times lose caste on one unplaced performance.
1!ll!Nlillllllllllllllllllll[|||IIIIIIIIIItllllllllllllllllllll|||||||II!ll|||||f|||[|l!IIIII||||||(l Tremetus, winner of the Cambria Handicap at Takapuna last Saturday, is an Australian-bred gelding by Treclare from Lady Mildred. He was bought cheaply for 80 guineas bv the Ellerslie trainer, J. Williamson, on account of Mr E. P. Andreas, of Sydney, who furnished a winner on two occasions last season in Auckland with Gemlight, another son of Treclare. * * * * Hampton Park, who was responsible for a mild surprise in the decision of the Rakino Handicap at the Takapuna meeting last Monday by leading the field home in that race, formed one of the collection of yearlings bought cheaply at 100 guineas by Mr E. W. Alison, jun., at the Sydney sales last .autumn. Hampton Park was purchased some time back by Mr A. E. \\ atkins, and he gave his' new owner ■an early return. Hampton Park carries a promising appearance and the future should have something in store for him. * * * « The Wanganui Cup, to be run in February next, will 'be worth £IOOO. the club having decided to give £9OO in specie, while in addition Mr J. J. Taylor, of Westmere, is giving a gold cup of the value of £IOO to the owner of the winner. It is understood that some members of the committee were desirous of 'reducing the distance of the \\ anganui Cup from one mile and threequarters to a mile and a half, «but the proposal was not carried. Possiblv the Cup would attract a bigger field if the distance was shortened, but the extra quarter of a mile is more a test of stamina, and the Wanganui Club has always- shaped its policy—and wisely, too —in favour of encouraging stayers and the.best quality of horses. As the only mile and three-quarter handicap race in the Dominion, the Wanganui Cup holds a unique position and provides a good test between the mile and a half horses and the proved stayers. The Juvenile Handicap at the Wanganui Cup meeting has been made open to two and three year olds, and not limited to two-vear-olds only, as formerly. Lady’s Chain, the champion 14.1 performer in Sydney, will remain contented all da\> if she is allowed to watch aeroplanes flying about. The mare was standing quietly in a stall at the Kensington course the other morning when she suddenly pricked her ears, stepped a few paces forward, and threw her head in the air. The reason for her sudden activity was apparent when the drone of a ’plane engine far away was heard. Her keen eye did not take long to pick up the object, and she followed it until it passed out of sight. “She will watch them for hours.” said her trainer, F. Hart. “Often, when I am leading her at her exercise,..she will hear a ’plane, and immediately pull up and search the sky until she sees it. Not until it r is out of vision will she move on. Sometimes when there are a lot about, I have trouble in leading her. She wants to stop and see all of them I think she would fly in one if she had a chance,” he added.
• trotting notes. The grass track at New Brighton will be available for training on Tuesday, as well as to-morrow, for the benefit of horses engaged at next week’s meeting ’ * * * * Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting will close at noon on Tuesday. * * * Hs With the near approach of the Christmas and New Year racing, training operations at Addington are becoming much more interesting. After the big November meeting is finished there is usually a quiet time for about three weeks, and then work at headquarters again becomes interesting. There is a large number of second-class and maiden pacers in work, and a lot of useful training work will be done until horses are shipped away to various parts of the Dominion, to be raced during the holidays. A large contingent is in work for the New Brighton meeting next week, and with Canterbury Park, Ashburton and the West Coast meetings there should be plenty doing during the next few weeks. The three-year-old filly Fairyland is back in work at Addington. She has plenty of speed in training, but in her race at the New Brighton meeting, a few months ago, she performed badly. It is to be hoped that she will have some race experience before being started in the trotters’ classic event at Forbury Park. H« * * Talaro has improved a good deal since he raced at the Cup meeting. The North Canterbury-owned pacer was a long way below his best form last month at Addington, but he is now coming along fast. Hs * H* * Linkman is back in work again after a short spell. This fine pacer, who raced particularly well last season and at the August meeting, trained off in his Cup preparation and raced badly. It looks as though he would do a lot better in future races if he were given a longer respite from training work. H= He sje s}s J. Deyell’s two trotters, Nelson Ata j and Nelson’s Prince, both of whom | raced w*ell at Forbury Park last week, look none the worse for their trip and are doing capitally in training. ' H- h- H- hs Bramdean is remaining fairly sound and is being kept going. The Nelson Bingen trotter was corning on well when he went wrong, and it is to be hoped he stands up to his training work. * * * * Prince Pointer looks a good deal lighter than just prior to the Cup meeting. This brilliant pacer races well on a right-handed track, and he may show improved form at the Auckland meeting at the end of the month. ❖ Hi sis sp. John Mauritius is looking in good order and is trotting with all his old dash. He is a capital trottej over two miles when at his best. Hs * Hs * Erin’s Lynn, who went sore prior to the Cup meeting, has evidently made a good recovery, as she is back in work again under C. Tasker’s charge. He Hs H« Hs V. Alborn’s big trotter by Denver Huon is doing a lot of useful w*ork and is on the improve. It may take some time before he is ready, but a few races should be beneficial. He He H« Royal Comrade, who raced particularly well at the Greymouth meeting in October, is doing steady work, and he will be raced at the West Coast meetings during the holiday period.
INCONSISTENT form AT TAKAPUNA.
(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, December 6. Under the caption of “ Inconsistency.” a correspondent, signing himself “ Fair Play to All,” writes to the Press as follows:—With reference to the inquiry held by the Judicial Committee of the Takapuna Jockey Club, at the recent meeting, regarding the running of the winner of the Stanley Handicap and the subsequent satisfactory explanation, I would like to know why another glaring case of inconsistency went unchallenged. I refer to the winner of a big handicap on the second day. Although known as a stayer, he ran all but last in a longer distance race on the first day and yet no questions were asked. I v.'ould like to know if this is consistency on the part of the powers that be.
GOOD PROSPECTS FOR ASHBURTON MEETING.
FIELDS REVIEWED FOR TO-MORROW'S RACES. (By MARTIAN.) Up to quite recently, the Ashburton Country Racing Club had had a very lean time, their fixtures not meeting with the support they deserved. For the last meeting or two a change has come over the scene, and the Ashburton Club has had successful functions, well supported by owners and trainers, and the public. For the summer meeting to-morrow the club has received a fine list of acceptances, and once again it looks as if the progress will be maintained. Master Clarence Well. The day’s sport will commence with the Winchmore Hack Handicap, in which Master Clarence is sure to be in request. He has run some sound races lately, and he should show up in this class. Last Mark, who had a good record in the North Island before being brought to the South, should be ready to show his best, but so far this season he has not been in the money, and it might be as well to wait and see how he has progressed since going into E. J. Ellis’s stable. Phastar has not raced up to expectations in his recent efforts, but he has only to race up to what he is capable of to make his presence felt. Fair Exchange was backed and beaten at Riccarton, but he was slow in getting away on that occasion. If he jumps out well, he should share in the prize. Punchestown and Gay Crest may not be ready, but Royal Limond may surprise. Audience has a chance. Master Clarence and Fair Exchange look the best. illlli!lff!iill!ll!!llll!!!ll!lll|||||iil||||||||||!f(|||||||||||||(l|{||!lllllll{||||||[|||[lll!llllUl
A big field is engaged in the Melrose Trot Handicap. Oinadora and Eitfelton Lass should race well oft tile front, while further back Author I 4 ranz and Salient may do best. Malmsey’s Prospects. The smallest field of the day will contest the big money allocated to the Tinwald Handicap. Malmsey is sure to be a popular fancy, and with her recent form as a guide she should take a lot of beating. Night Lad showed a lot of dash in his races at Riccarton, but his youthful rider did not appear equal to getting the best out of him. With a stronger horseman on top the Nightraid gelding would command a strong following, and he could be depended on to play his part well. Quarterdeck has a handy weight under which she should show up, as her form of late has been good. Sea Raid may not see out the journey, a remark which also applies to Buoyant and Gold Brick. Chickwheat is very well and last time he raced on the Ashburton course he was third to Chide and Prickles. Malmsey and Night Lad appeal most. Sleipner’s Opportunity. A big field is down to contest the Lagmhor Plate. As soon as the tote opens there will be a rush to be on Sleipner, and he looks like being one of the hottest favourites of the day. The Valkyrian—Keep Watch colt ran a good race in the IrwelT Handicap at Riccarton, but a slow beginning spoilt his chance. He will set a hot pace if he gets a decent start on this occasion. Bellbird ran a solid third at the last Ashburton meeting, while Straightcourse and Sapient are possibilities, especially the last-named, who showed a lot of speed at Riccarton. Sleipner and Bellbird should salute the judge. Te Awhina Appeals. Te Awhina has been executing such excellent trials at Riccarton that she will command a lot of attention in, the Moreton Hack Handicap. Dutch Money, with all her weight, must be respected, while the disappointing Haze has a chance with 8.1. Thurso and Marsham are in good fettle, but Ranelagh let his supporters down badly at Riccarton, and may make amends. Te Awhina and Dutch Money should fight out the finish. The back-markers are set a hard task to get through those in front of them in the Selma Trot Handicap. Auguste Pointer and Royal Iroquois are a pair on the front with a lot of speed. Speedy Solgele, Arikiwai may not be ready to see out a fast six furlongs in the Wakanui Handicap, but Arrowmir should show up. Buoyant’s prospects look better here than in the Tinwald Handicap, while Decoy Bird’s brilliant track effort yesterday will have the effect ol increasing his admirers. Solgele is staying on better and such a brilliant beginner must be given a lot \ of thought. Proud Knight is expected any da}'- now. Solgele and Buoyant (if reseved) look the picks, but Decoy Bird should be close up. HANDICAPS. EGMONT RACING CLUB. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 5.
