BURGESSES DISCUSS SUMNER AFFAIRS.
The monthly meeting of the Sumner Burgesses’ Association was held irv'tHe Town Hall on Saturday .evening. The president, Mr A. J. Scott, was in- the chair. Correspondence was read from the Telegraph Engineer relative to the provision of a public telephone at the tramway terminus, Scarborough. It was decided to await further information regarding costs. A discussion ensued on the proposal to hold a local gala during Christmas and .Now Year week. “ If this is to be held on the lines of the annual Mardi Gras at .Napier, .1 am opposed to it,” said the president. " Sumner is a residential place, and those who live on the Esplanade are rated heavily for the privilege. J. am sure they would be sorry to have the seafront turned into a bear garden, and their rights must bo respected.” Other speakers said that the attitude of residents was likely to be misunderstood. There was a feeling in town that Sumner did not want visitors, but this was incorrect. Sumner’s natural attractions appealed to many people.
Messrs J. S. Young and 1-f. C. Jamieson were deputed to represent the association at a public meeting to be held next Thursday to discuss gala prospects. It was decided t,o refer to the council of the United Burgesses’ Association the necessity for the immediate appointment of rangers to protect the_ native flora in the Arthur’s Pass National Park, and request that representations be made to the board on these lines. Tt was decided to hold the next meeting of the association on Monday, December 2.
