ASHLEY RIVER TRUST HAS MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Ashley River Trust was held on Friday night; present—Messrs C. S. Ayers (chairman), R. IT. Bailey, H. A. Benjes, G. Bruere, P. J. Lindsay and R. Wright. The foreman (Mr H. Quinney) reported that during the past month the staff had been erecting the groyne below the railway bridge, of which twenty-five chains Was completed. They were now putting in a short three-row groyne across stream at the lower end. The foreman complained of wandering stock giving trouble. The report was received, and the foreman was given instructions to have all wandering stock impounded. ihe financial statement for the month showed receipts £lB2 Os 9d, including rates collected by the Rangiora Borough Council amounting to £l7B 10s 9d: and payments £177 Is Bd. The bank debit balance was £IOB 10s 9d. Accounts amounting to £57 Os 9d were passed for payment. An application from W. Savage to lease a small strip of land adjoining his present property at the Ashley River, at 10s a year, was granted. Mr Douglas W. Wright wrote asking if it was a fact that the Trust had forbidden trespassing on Trust property. He had been spending weekends at the Ashley fishing and it would be a disappointment to him if he was prevented from continuing to do so. The secretary, Mr L. W. Harley, reported that he had replied stating that the Commissioners had no objection to anyone trespassing on Trust properties provided no damage was done to growing willows, and they welcomed any sportsman enjoying the good fishing in the Ashley. The action of the secretary was endorsed.

Replying to an application for payment of the association’s quota to the flood gate and protective work at Taranaki Creek, the secretary of the Waikuku Beach Improvement Association wrote advising that the executive had resolved “ That the Ashley River Trust be advised that the work carried out by them on the flood gate is not satisfactory; the gate does not close, and is badly warped, and in the meantime payment is held up.” It was decided to make, an inspection of the work before taking any further steps in the matter. In reference to a complaint received from a landowner through the clerk to the Rangiora County Council regarding damage to willows by his sheep, it was decided to write to the Lands and Survey Department in reference to the transfer of the lease of Reserve 2850, which adjoins his property, and also to reply that the letter was received and the complaint was being looked into. A complaint was received from a ratepayer that the Makirikiri was scouring out the bank and taking away a good deal of land. It was decided to make an inspection of the scour and if necessary plant willows in the autumn. FARM SCHOOL PROJECT.The Mayor (Mr C. S. Ayers) advised the Hon 11. Atmore, Minister of Education, of the result of the meeting convened to further the High School farm project, and has received a reply as follows:—“I am very pleased indeed that at a largely attended and representative meeting held in Rangiora, it was decided to support an extension of the agricultural side of work at the Rangiora High. School and that some large monetary donations were made Best wishes for success.” BOXING SCHOOL. There was a large attendance of boxing enthusiasts at the Northern A. and P. Association’s hall on Friday evening, when Mr Morris closed his class for the season by staging a series of friendly bouts principally between his pupils. There were ten events on the programme, and several amateur followers of the sport gave exhibitions. Hope was expressed that a boxing association would be formed in Rangiora next year. Mr R. IT. Livingstone, chairman of the Christchurch Sports Club, who was present, proffered help in that direction, and promised to assist to stage a tournament in Rangiora in the near future. A pocket wallet was presented to A. Murphy for being the most improved boxer since the class was formed. Supper brought the evening to a close, and a collection made to defray expenses amounted to £5 Ids. RANGIORA SHOW. Entries are coming in well for the Northern A. and P. Association’s show to be held on November 8. Intending exhibitors are reminded that the closing dates for entries is to-morrow, October 29. ANNIVERSARY SERVICES. Anniversary services of the Methodist Sunday School were held yesterday The fine weather prevailing and the added attraction of the singing of special hymns by the children drew large congregations which taxed the seating accommodation of the church. The resident minister, the Rev S. Henderson, conducted the services,- the addresses being of special interest to children. In the afternoon the prizes won were presented by Mrs Henderson. The superintendent, Mr C. S. Ayers, conducted the singing and Mr A. Lane presided at the organ.
