Bishop West-Watson, in his address to the Diocesan Synod yesterday, referred to the unemployed and to the establishment of St Martin’s House of Help, a centre from which the Rev P. Revell, city evangelist, will work. The Bishop said:—“The requests for help which come both to clergy and laity are often so puzzling that they leave us with a feeling of impotence or of utter uncertainty as to the wisest way to help. I have been struck by the way in which Mr Revell’s long experi ence of needs and possibilities enables him to see light where all is darkness to oneself, and I am sure it will be a relief and also a source of joy to us to know where to apply for advice ourselves, and where to refer for friendly help and counsel those who ask our help. We are making a small experiment, but it may grow to a far more extensive work in time. In any case, surely the Church in Christchurch should no longer be so far behind our other big centres in its social service work of this kind.”
