NEW RADIUM NEEDLES FOR HOSPITAL WORK
The North Canterbury Hospital Board has approved of a recommendation from the officer in charge of the radium department, supported by the medical superintendent and the honorary staff, that a number of steel needles filled with radium should be sent Home and the radium transferred to platinum needles of approved shape. There will be a loss in the transfer of radium from one needle to another. The total cost of the alterations and making good the radium will be about £SOO. Application is being made to the Travis bequest trustees for assistance in obtaining this sum.
During the past month, sixty-five new patients applied for treatment by radium, and sixty-three . were treated. Fifty-five applications of radium were given, and sixty-six deep therapy treatments. Radium was taken out of the Hospital on four occasions. There were 111 applications of the ultra-violet rays. The X-ray tube functioned for 812 minutes.
