RICKSHAW MEN WRECK 100 TRAMS.
SERIOUS RIOTING IN CHINESE CITIES CAUSES TREMENDOUS DAMAGE. (United Press Assn.— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received October 23, 11 a.m.) SHANGHAI, October 22. A long standing dispute between rickshaw men and the tramways in the cities of China culminated in an outbreak of tremendous riots in Pekin, resulting in the wrecking of 100 tramcars in the principal streets, a complete stoppage of traffic, the enforcement of martial law and serious injury to numbers of tramway employees. The police were unable to control them and devoted themselves to keeping the crowds out of danger, leaving the wreckers to clear the field. Late this evening the rioters had complete control of the streets, intercepting motors, forcing the passengers to alight and smashing everything mechanical.
Military forces and the police later drove the rioters from the streets. The situation is now in hand.—Australian Press Association.
