DEATH OCCURS VERY SUDDENLY OF LADY RHODES.

The sudden death occurred at Otahuna last evening of Lady Jessie Cooper Rhodes, wife of Sir Heaton Rhodes. She was sixty-four 3*ears of age. Lady Rhodes had been in normal health lately and news of her death will come as a great shock to her wide circle of friends. Last evening she attended church as usual and was suddenly stricken with an attack which proved fatal shortly after her return home. Before her marriage in 1891 she was Miss Clark of Glenara, Victoria. During her life in Canterbury, Lady Rhodes took a very keen interest in social work and gave generous support to a number of societies in Christchurch. It was due to her generosity that district nursing work was begun in the city. She was a member of Nurse Maude’s committee and had fostered the work since its inception. For the past few years Lady Rhodes had been president of the Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home, which she greatly assisted. During the Great War, she was one of those untiring workers for the soldiers. Amongst her other activities she was president _of the Hospital Lady Visitors’ Association and a Lady of Grace of the St John Ambulance Association. She was also interested in the Victoria League. The funeral will leave “ Otahuna,” Tai Tapu, to-morrow afternoon, at two o’clock for the Papanui Cemetery. Reference at Harbour Board. The death of Lady Rhodes was referred to by Mr H. Holland, M.P., chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, at to-day’s meeting of the board. 44 Sir Heaton Rhodes,” he said, 4 ‘ has suffered a sad bereavement. On Thursday I had the pleasure of having afternoon tea with Sir Heaton and Lady Rhodes. Lady Rhodes then was in a happy state of mind, and seemed to be in as good health as I have ever seen her. The announcement of her death was a great shock to me. In many ways. Lady Rhodes was a very useful member of society.

The board passed a motion expressing sympathy with Sir Heaton Rhodes
