BOWLING.

OPENING OF SEASON. f LYTTELTON CLUB. The Lyttelton Club opened the season under Ideal weather conditions. The president, Mr T. Maher, welcomed visitors and said that he was pleased to see so many present, and so many members of other clubs. The past season probably was the most successful since the club was formed, due to the good work by the president, Mr J. Neville and a strong committee. He hoped that the next president would be able to repeat that statement. He paid a tribute to the Match Committee and the greenkeeper for the good condition of the green. Mr Maher asked Miss Eileen Maher to send down the kitty and Mrs Maher rolled the first bowl and declared the season open. Friendly matchces were played, and those present were entertained at afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs Maher.

CANTERBURY CLUB. There was a very large attendance of bowlers and their lady friends nt the opening of the Canterbury Club’s green on Saturday afternoon. The grounds were gaily decorated for the occasion with flags and streamers, while the club colours (rod and black) were prominent everywhere. As tho visitors arrived they were met by the president (Mr L. Lewis) and Mrs Lewis, who handed to each lady a sealed number, and later, when the lucky number was declared, the winner proved to be Mrs J. S. Neville, who was tho recipient of a very handsome crystal vase. In welcoming the visitors, Mr Lewis said that every bowler present would bo delighted to know that Mr Mat. Barnett, who was one of their most respected past-presidents, was able to be present. and that he would again be playing after his long and serious illness. For the magnificent appearance of the green and surroundings they had to thank the green superintendent (Mr Robinson) and the caretaker (Mr Fred Andrews) for the wonderful work which they had performed during tho wintei months. The club was also extremelj lucky in having a band of workers wh< took a pride in the appearance of thei: grounds, and to them he expressed thanks. He trusted the season on which thev were entering would be one of th< best and most prosperous, and he hoped the members would pull together, bt loyal to their club, to their olficers, and to their skips. Mr Lewis then called on the vice-president of the Centre to SP \fr C *L. B. Evans (Kaiapoi) apologised for the absence of tho Centre president (Mr D. E. Wood), who was unable to b< present owing to a previous engagement He congratulated the club on the posi tion it held amongst other clubs in Can terbury, and hoped that it would see it.* way to give support to the four-rinl match scheme which had been proposer by the Centre. He assured member: that the Centre was trying to do all i' could for the good of bowling, and if the different schemes suggested did noi meet with the approval of the majorit* they must not think less of their repr* sentatives. Mrs W. Ives (wife of the vice-pres* dent) threw the jack and Mrs Lewi rolled the first bowl, after which th president declared the season open. The billiard room, in which afternootea was served, was beautifully decora 1 ed with flowers for the occasion, an< Mrs L. Lewis, with a committee o: ladies, looked after everyone’s comfort Practice games were played during tinafternoon. SUMNER CLUB. The Sumner Bowling Club opened it> new season on Saturday afternoon in ex cellent weather. Mr T. F. Chambers tho president, with Mrs Chambers, re oeived the guests and afterwards enter tained them at afternoon tea. Later M Chambers expressed his pleasure at tlv attendance. He read apologies fron. Messrs W. S. Mitchell (CJisborno), F. C Cooper, Sd M. B Crawford, H. Buttle, .and E. W. Wade. The club was stil. you-i.g, but it owed Its success to tiu pioneers for their happy thought am. Lard work. One of the foundation members, Mr H. W. Heslop, was stil. among them. Complimentary reference was made to the work of the gree; keeper, Mr Edwards. Overseas visitors j from Queensland, Victoria and England had been sent by the Centre to visit Sumner, as had, also, visitors from Otago. The Centre appreciated the fact that they were a loyal club. Mr H. B. Oakey, representing the Christchurch Centre, apologised for the absence of the president, Mr 1). E. Wood, and said that the Sumner Club was always noted, for its hospirnlity, and was keen to secure visits from overseas visitors. Sumner bowlers were to be found in all the tournaments. The victory of W. J Hampton, sen., and jun., in winning the champion of chamr on pairs, had earned the congratulations of Canterbury bowlers. H© had much pleasure in presenting them with their certificates. Williams, Edwards, Vance and Chambers had played good bowls at the Easter tournament, and W.
