WELLINGTON TO HAVE NEW RAILWAY STATION.
(Special to the “Star”) WELLINGTON, October 12. Cabinet has approved of the Bunny Street site for the new Wellington railway station, and of the general lay-out of the goods yards on the reclamation at Thorndon. This announcement was made yesterday by ijhe Hon W. B. Taverner. He said that provision had been made for adequate and up-to-date railway facilitiees on the ground floor, including refreshment rooms, shops, etc. The building would consist of five storeys, and the plans revealed that it would have a dignified and impressive appearance. At the same time, a . endeavour had been made to combine simplicity with utility throughout, and no items were of an extravagant nature. “ Arrangements will be made,” said Mr Taverner, “to accommodate the complete administration staffs and district offices in the new station building. The Government Accommodation Board will take over the present bead office and site, which will be used for the housing of other Government offices which are at present spread over the city.” As a result of a conference with the |City Council’s officfals, satisfactory arrangements have been arrived at with regard to the lay-out of the city transport facilities associated with the station area. The Minister mentioned that .overhead access across the yards to the water-front area at Davis Street will be provided. Provision will also be made in the plans for future access to the Ilutt Road from the water-front area, but this bridge will not be built immediately, traffic at present, he is advised, not justifying this being done. It is intended to proceed at once with the erection of a modern goods shed as part of the scheme decided upon. There will be ten passenger platforms at the station, and the longest will be 1000 ft. It is proposed to provide a plaza on the Bunny Street frontage, bOOft by 300 ft. This will give a circulating area for trams, buses, motors and pedestrians. The front is in a direct line with several streets radiating out into the city.
