LUKEY BREAKS RECORD IN PALMERSTON TO WELLINGTON RACE.
WELLINGTON. October 12. The Palmerstoivto-Wellirtgton cycle race resulted: W. Hussy, Foxton (70min) 1 S. Webber,’Wellington (lOmin) .... 2 L. Lukey, Christchurch (scr) 3
The winner’s time was 6hr 25min 20 sec. Lukey secured fastest time, shr 34min 2Q3-ssec, beating his previous record by five . minutes.
CYCLE ROAD RACE TO AMBERLEY DECIDED TO-DAY.
Fifty-two rid«ers started in the annual thirty-mile road race held under the auspices of the Canterbury Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. from Christchurch to Amberley this afternoon. A start was made from the Papanul Hotel, the scratch men giving away 9&rain to those on the limit mark. The weather was good, although the riders had a head wind most of the way. The large number of cars on the road made it exceptionally difficult for the riders, who had to cycle through clouds of dust. Along the concrete • strip between Papamii and Belfast the scratch men set a strong pace and made up a fair bit of time. At Kalapoi' they were still going strong, averaging about 23 miles per hour. Their nearest rider was R. Cole (7min 45sec). At this stage the riders were well strung out, the limit men averaging about- 17 miles an hour. At the Cam Bridge, Duggan (2min) and Daly (2min) were close up on the leaders. K. G. Lange (2min) was also well u’p. With tw r o-thirds of the distance covered, the hard going was telling on somfe of the limit men, who were dropping back. When Saltwater Greek was reached, W. A. Christensen was leading a bunch of ten, J. Benson and L. Fever being next. At this stage the scratch men were about 3£min behind the leaders and were doing about 20 miles an hour. In a close finish, K. G. Lange beat G. F. Brown by three lengths, while H. E. Young was a length and h. half further back third. It was a very fast finish, Lange putting in a strong sprint. Grose and Lamberton, two of the scratch mten. put up a good performance, dead heating for twelfth place and also recording fastest time. Wilcockson, the other scratch man, had a spill at Lelthfleld and was. unable to make up the lost ground. He finished In fourteenth place. Results were:— K. G. Lange (2min> 1 G. F. The Paparua Cycling Club held a twenty-five miles road race at Islington this afternoon. Thirty-two riders started, with J. W. Jordan, S. A. Jordan and C. J. Sowden on scratch.
