MOTOR UNIONS WILL CONFER REGARDING NEW TRANSPORT BILL.

The executive of the South Island Motor Union met last evening; present —Messrs H. C. Harley (chairman), J. L. Danks, F. W. Johnston, R. H. Parker, H. Halllday (Dunedin), J. S. Hawkes, F. W. Freeman and P. R. Harman (secretary). The chairman extended a welcome to Messrs Danks and Parker, who took their seats as members of the executive for the first time. Reporting on the deputation which recently waited on thte Prime Minister regarding the Main Highways Board’s funds, the chairman said that it was very satisfactory to know that theii* efforts had been successful, and the two grants of £200,000 and £35,000 were to be paid over by the Government without any charge being made for interThe South Canterbury Automobile Association wrote congratulating the union on the success of. its efforts in connection with the matter. The question of selecting a design for a uniform windscreen badge was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. "With reference to the question of the danger to traffic caused by stock wandering at night, which had been referred to the executive from the annual meeting, the chairman said that all recognised the danger, but it was difficult to know what could be done. It was decided to co-operate with the North Island Motor Union in writing to the Minister of Justice regarding the matter. It was decided that Messrs Ha> l**y, Danks, Hawkes and Harman should represent the union at a conference with the North Island Union, to be held at Wellington next Wedneday for the purpose of discussing the Transport Law Amendment Bill, and that they should give evidence before the special committee of the House of RepresentaThe Transport Law Amendment Bill was discussed, and a number >f suggestions for alterations were agreed upon for further consideration at the conference with the North Island Union.
