JUDGE REFUSES PROBATION TO CONVICTED THIEF.

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, .October 11. Prisoners sentenced in the Supreme Court to-day were: Oliver John Keenan, breaking, entering and theft, two years in the Borstal Institute. Stephen James Petrie, forgery, probation for two years. In refusing probation to Keenan, Mr Justice Kennedy said the crimes were committed at night. Moreover, a few months prior to the committal the accused had pleaded guilty to theft, and in substance, if not actually, had been released on probation. He must vindicate and preserve the probation system by showing those who violated it that they couldn’t enjoy leniency.
