Miss Madden returned to Ashburton yesterday, from a visit to Christchurch. Miss Trixie Farrell returned to Hinds yesterday afternoon after visiting Christchurch. Mrs R. Browning arrived from Wellington this morning, and is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs Maurice Macfarlane is returning to Waikari to-day after paying a visit to Timaru. Miss Fay Baffin, assisted by Mesdames E. Boulton, Arthur Hales, Ford Wilks, the Misses Otley and Allison, was in charge of the stall at Everybody’s Theatre this morning, which was well stocked with every kind of tempting home made delicacies, a plump turkey, chickens, eggs, vegetables and flowers to tempt buyers, and at the same time to add to the funds of St Saviour’s Orphanage. The following pupils of the Sacred Heart Girls’ College, Ferry Road, were successful in passing the shorthand examinations held recently in connection with Pitman’s Examination Department, Melbourne—Shorthand, speed examination, 110 words per minute: Pauline Sleeman, Flora Gleeson, Kitty Gee, Eileen Mahony, Margaret Mulhern, Sybil Perkin, Irine Poole: 50 words per minute: Annie Borcoskie, Merle Cunningham, Elza Rookes, Patricia Devlin, Irene M’Phee, Rosaleen M’Kendry, Mary Price.

The residence, of Mr and Mrs F. Buchanan was the scene of much gaiety recently when Miss E. Platt and her surprise party paid a visit to celebrate the birthday of Mr F. Buchanan. The evening was spent in games and songs. Mr E. Drapper carried out the duties of M.C. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” closed a very pleasant evening. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs F. Buchanan, Mr and Mrs W. Randal, Mr and Mrs F. Platt, Mrs Scott, the Misses E. Platt, M. Buchanan, M. Platt, H. Dunn, R. Scott and D. and H. Platt, and Messrs E. Drapper, R. Neate, V. Wells, W. Sargeant, F. Parata, N. Holland, R. Weeks and F. Platt. On Friday afternoon, at the offices of Messrs Ashby, Bergh and Co., Ltd., Cashel Street, a pleasing little function was held, the occasion being a presentation to Miss E. Sullivan and Mr A. M. Hatch, both members of the firm, who are shortly to be married. After tea was served, Mr W. R. Heney, the manager, on behalf of the staff, presented Miss Sullivan with a silver tea service, and Mr Hatch with a handsome clock, and in a eulogistic speech conveyed to them , both the good'wishes of their fellow-workers, and wished them every success in their future life. Mr Hatch suitably responded. An enjoyable evening was spent recently at the residence of Mrs Morrissey, 60, Fitzgerald Avenue, on the occasion of the birthday of their mother. The table wras beautifully decorated by her daughter, Mrs Hickenbotham. The evening was spent in musical items, games and dancing, the prize-winners being: Miss Thelma Warren and Mr W. Fouch. Among those present were: Mrs Morrissey, Mrs Flemming, Mrs Pengelley, Mr and Mrs Hickenbotham, Mr and Mrs M. Fletcher and Misses T. Warren, P. Morrissey, I. Morfissfey, G. Garner, M. Powell, M. Armstrong, T. Barker, Olive Patton, and Messrs C. Brown, J. Morrissey, L. Lepper, A. Debenham, W. Fouch and J. Pathon. The evening ended with the singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” In order to help in obtaining urgently needed funds for the new Connon Hall building two short plays were performed at the Little Theatre, Canterbury College, last night. Every seat was occupied, and the plays were capitally acted and evoked much applause. ” The Twelve Pound Look,” by Sir J. M. Barrie, produced by Miss Valerie Tennant, was staged first. Miss Carol West-Watson took the part of Lady Sims, Mr E. B. E. Taylor that of Sir Harry Sims, Miss Valerie Tennant was Kate, his former wife, and Mr R. A. Young the orthodox butler. The second play, “ The Locked Chest,” by Masefield, produced by Professor Poj cock, was a complete contrast. Professor Pocock played the part of Thord Goddi (a farmer), Mrs Pocock was Vigdis (his wife), Mr W. M. Brookes was Thordolf (a cousin of Vigdis) and Mr J. Struthers a lord. Other roles were taken by Messrs L. C. Webb, F. J. Bennett and R. Neale. Mr C. Martin played the incidental music. Sweets were sold readily in aid of the earthquake fund. Advice has just been received from Pitman’s Examination Department, Melbourne, that the following pupils of Miss Digby’s Commercial School, Worcester Street, have been successful in obtaining Pitman’s first-class speed and theory certificates as the result of examinations held in May last, all the candidates who presented themselves for examination having passed. The Christchurch Shorthand Writers’ Association’s certificate was also awarded to the following writers of Gregg’s shorthand—9o words per minute: Gretta Maggs; 80 words per minute: Phyllis Dollan, Jessie Jeffrey, Doreen Rose; 70 words per minute: Phyllis Devan.

An enjoyable evening was speivt at the residence of Mr and Mrs G. Webb, on Wednesday to bid farewell to Messrs J. and IT. Burns prior to their departure for Australia. An enjoyable birthday evening was held last Saturday in the Rechabites’ Hall, St Asaph Street. The evening was spent in dancing, games and competitions. The prizes for competitions were won by Mrs H. Beaumont and Mrs 11. Manning (Waipukurau). Music for the evening was supplied by Messrs J. Wilson and J. Wynn. The monthly meeting of the North Brighton branch of the W.C.T.U. was held at the residence of Mrs Norrie, Bowhill Road, on Monday evening. Mrs A. IT. Henry presided. A circular letter was received from Miss B. M. Harband relative to dancing, and the meeting decided that the president should reply, stating the views of the members. Committees were appointed to make arrangements for the birthday party. An invitation was received from the New Brighton branch to a social on July 12. The monthly meeting of the Sydenham W.C.T.U. was held in the Baptist schoolroom, Colombo Street, on Thursday. Mrs Gilmour presided over a good attendance. The Rev J. K. Archer gave an address on the life and work of Mr T. E. Taylor. He spoke of Mr Taylors great intellect and personality and gifts as a speaker, and his earnest work for the good of humanity. The speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Miss Metson sang tv/o solos, which were greatly appreciated. Three new members were initiated. A delightful surprise party in honour of Mr Frank Robb recently visited the home of Mr and Mrs H. Booth, Suffolk Street, Linwood. Games, competitions, songs and dancing passed the evening. Mr Bailey, Mr Robb, Mrs 'Rowland aijd Mrs Fox were the winners of the competitions. Those present included: Mr and Mrs H. Booth, Mr and Mrs Bailey, Mr and Mrs L. Hancock, Mr and Mrs D. Fox, Misses M. Quellan, P. Cormack, N. Booth, C. Booth, D. Hancock, Dorothy Hancock, Messrs F. Robb, I. Booth, S. Bailey, N. Bailey, R. Fox and H. Hancock.

A lovely sunny afternoon and a good attendance crowned with success, the annual social of the O.T.BAV.M.U. held on Thursday afternoon in the school hall. The president, Mrs Robertson, occupied the chair. Valuable help was rendered by Mesdames R. Voiler, N. Dawson, Wood and Miss Jenkin with solos and recitations. Misses L. and H. Reid, of the C.1.M., gave in structive and interesting addresses on mission work in China. A collection in aid of the Mission funds amounted to £37 10s. At the close of the meeting the members entertained their friends to a dainty afternoon tea.

The monthly meeting of the Lyttelton Plunket Society was held on Tuesday evening, when there were present: Mesdames Sutton, Comer, Preston, Tylee, Wilson, Shepheard, Stanley, Stephens, Mahar, Buchanan and Chrisp. Mrs Sutton presided. The committee expressed great satisfaction at the result of the carnival dance held recently with the assistance of the various sports clubs. Nurse Twentyman’s report for June in Lyttelton and Akaroa districts was as follows:—Lyttelton— Visits to rooms, adults 80, babies 75, pre-school children 20, new case 1; visits to homes, new cases 16, old cases 36; ITeathcote 18. Akaroa and Duvauchelle—Visits to rooms, adults 30, babies 30, pre-school children 7, messages by telephone 13. A very pleasant evening was spent recently at the Come In Club Room, Worcester Street, when Mr and Mrs H. Hutton entertained a number of relatives and friends on the occasion of the coming of age of their eldest son Frank. The evening was spent in dancing, competitions and musical items. The musicians were Mr Yates and Mr Crawford. Mrs Rayner and Mrs Toomer played a piano duet and Mr and Mrs Scrimshaw gave a vocal item. Mr Crawford accompanied them. Prize winners were:—Lucky spot, Miss Raxworthy and Mr Stan Raxworthy; Monte Carlo, Miss N. Williams and Mr G. Stringer; competitions, Miss May Lucas and Mr Toomer, Miss N. Williams and Mr Crawford, Miss Violet Humphries and Mr J. Rodgers. A dainty supper was provided. The monthly meeting of the North Linwood Free Kindergarten was held in the school hall. Mrs Calder occupied the chair. Those present were: Mesdames Retallick, Stewart and Powell. Resignations were received from Mrs Martin and Mrs Norman. At a recent jumble sale the sum of £8 was raised towards the funds. The school report showed a roll number of 54, the highest attendance being 50 and the lowest (wet days) 14. The average attendance was 46. During the month parents were invited to the kindergarten in order to form a mothers’ guild. Mesdames Leney, Retallick and Martin were thanked for gifts of pictures for the school. Mesdames Retallick and Stewart were appointed to visit the school this month. The friends of Mr and Mrs O’Neil, Wildberry Street, Woolston, visited their home in a well organised surprise party recently. A happy evening was spent. Games, music and songs passed the time, after which a dainty supper was served. Those present included: Mr and Mrs O’Neil, Mr and Mrs Metcalfe, Mr and Mrs Scott, Mr and Mrs C. Sawtell, Mr and Mrs Hudson, Mr and Mrs Frudd, Mr and Mrs A. Marquet, Kir and Mrs S. Marquet, Mrs Falkingham, Mrs L. Falkkingham, Mr and Mrs H. Booth, Mr and Mrs D. Fox, Mrs and Miss Prince, Misses Frudd (2), Miss Carew, Miss Rattray, Miss Saggers, Mrs Sawtell, sen., Miss Falkingham (2), Miss J. Rainford, Messrs A. B. Sawtell, R. Sawtell, Falkingham, M. G.
