Shirley-St. Albans Notes

By Special Correspondent of the * 4 Star.**

ST ALBANS BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the St Albans Burgesses’ Association took place on Tuesday night. The president, Mr F. Prouting, presided. Correspondence was received from the City Council Electricity Committee in answer to the association’s request for a deputation to wait on the Electricity Committee regarding the shifting of an electric light from its present position in Trafalgar Street to the pole at the corner of Edgeware Road and Trafalgar Street. The letter stated that the matter had been before the committe on a number of previous occasions, the locality had been inspected by the committee as a whole, and by individual members of the committee. Plans of the locality, and reports upon the lighting had been considered, and •the committee regretted it could see no reason for departing from its previous decision. The letter was received, and considerable discussion took place on the decision. Several members said that when a letter was sent to the City Council, about four years ago, on the matter, an answer was received from the City Council stating that the council would accede to the association’s request for a lamp at the corner, but when the lamp was fixed it was placed at the present position instead of at the corner. Why it was placed there nobody seemed to know. One member said that perhaps the council would shift the light when a serious accident occurred at the corner. The matter was left over until the next • meeting. A letter was received from the seci retary of the Victory School Committee, asking the co-operation of the I association in an endeavour to induce the City Council to take over and improve the lane leading from Caledonian Road to the school, and known as Keogh’s Lane. The present condition of the lane precluded its Use for any but pedestrian traffic to the school, and that traffic was only possible on account of the parents of pupils attending the school raising the money to form a footpath. The secretary was

instructed to write to the City Council on the matter. A letter was received from the Chief Postmaster with respect to the closing of the Christchurch North Post Office during the lunch hour. It was decided to leave the matter in abeyance for the time being. Messrs F. Prouting and J. Gagliardi, delegates to the United Burgesses’ Association, reported on the business transacted at the. annual meeting. The report was received, and the delegates thanked. The members of the delegation who were appointed to wait on the Football Association respecting the footway though the English Park, reported that they had inspected the English Park, and unanimously decided that there was not sufficient room for a footway through it. After a brief discussion, it was decided to abandon the matter. The meeting adjourned to enable billiards, snooker and card matches to be pla}*ed against the Aranui Burgesses. St Albans won the three matches, the results being as follows:—Billiards— St Albans 271, Aranui 263. Snooker— St Albans 268, Aranui 257. cards— St Albans 38 games, Aranui 32 games.

Two electric radiators were purchased and the old one repaired. The report was received Mr Ilillsdon, on behalf of the book repairing committee, stated that notwithstanding the fact that 151 books had just been rebound, over 100 dilapidated books were gathered during the last fortnight off the shelves. It was costing the library a considerable sum of money for repairs and a number of subscribers were not handling the books fairly. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on July 15. Ar the conclusion of the meeting the lady members of the committee entertained the male members to supper Mr L. B Freeman (vice-president) thanked Miss Gillanders (president) and the lady members for the very pleasant evening +hat he and the male members had pent, and said that one of the old members had stated that it was the first time that such an event had occurred. He also referred to the good work that the lady members were do t’ng. Miss Gillanders on behalf of the ladies, suitably replied.

STREET IMPROVEMENTS. The City Council employees are busy in the district tar sealing and regrading some of the streets that were in a very bad condition. Harper, teacher, had been appointed on the staff of the Geraldine High School. lie had taken a keen interest in school football and cricket, and it would be difficult to fill his place in this respect.
