A BIG NIGHT WITH THE ODDFELLOWS.

Noted for its hospitality, the Riccai ton Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U.. attracted members of the Order from far and near on Thursdav evening on the occasion of the official visit of the Notih Canterbury district officers. There was a very large gathering of sisters and brethren when the District Grand Mas ter and his suite were escorted to the N.G., Bro J. Leith, who placed the District G.M., Bro Meneer, as his right supporter, and District D.G.M. Bro Gourlay on his left. The other members of the official party were Immediate Past D.G.M. Bro W. J. Roberts, District Secretary Bro T. J. Archbold, District Treasurer ‘Bro J. Merriman, P.G/s Bros J. Exton and S. J. Geary, members of the District Management Committee. The Lodges represented were the Loyal City of Christchurch, Loyal Addington, Loyal Benevolent, Loyal Perseverance, Loyal Volunteer, Loyal Jubilee, Loyal Kaiapoi, Loyal Papanui, Loyal Phillipstown and Loyf l Sister Pearce (ladies) of the North Canterbury district, Loyal Rangiora (Ashley district), Loyal City of Nor wich (Lyttelton) and Loyal Egmont (New Plymouth). In such a large as semblage the giving and exchanging cf fraternal greetings was quite an impressive ceremony. At the conclusion of the formal business the Lodge went into harmony. Every seat was occupied at the long tables, and a pleasant time was spent

with supper, song, story and music. N.G. Bro Leith presided. The toasts were: “The King,” proposed by the chairman; “The Manchester Unity/' proposed by P.D.G.M. Bro Cullen, response by Director Bro T. J. Archbold; “The District Officers,” proposed by P.G. Bro A. Biggs, response by the District Grand Master; “The Loya 1 Riccarton Lodge,” proposed by Dis trict D.G.M. Bro Gourlay, response by the chairman; “Our Visitors,” proposc by P.G. Bro J. Exton, response by P.P.G.M. Bro Morgan. During the evening the District Grand Master, at the invitation of the Riccarton Lodge, presented P.G.’s Bros J. Exton and H. Caukwell with their Past Grand collars, and each briefly acknowledged the compliment. A feature of the evening’s entertainment was the excellent programme con tributed by an efficient orchestra. Miss Exton and Bros Stevens and E. King rendered songs, and Mr J. Laurenson gave a couple of recitations. LANTERN LECTURE. The Young Women’s Bible Class at Clarence Street Methodist Church is raising funds to furnish the classroom more comfortably. On Monday night the Rev A. H. Fowles, a former min ister on the Riccarton circuit, gave a most interesting lantern lecture, telling the story of his trip from New Zealand, through Canada and England Time would not - permit of his bringing his story right through to Christ-

church. This chapter is reserved for a later date. BASKETBALL SUCCESS. . The Wharenui School junior basketball team has just completed the matches to be played in the schoo’s tournament, with the following very satisfactory results, Wharenui scores being mentioned first: v. East Christ church A, won 11 to 6; v. West Christ church, lost 4 to 5; v. East Christchurch B, won 33 to 1; v. Fendalton, won 28 to 2. RICCARTON RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB. The fortnightly dance of the Riccarton Rugby League Club was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening when there was a large attendance. These dances attract visitors from as far distant as Lincoln, Hornby and Papanui. WHARENUI SOCIAL. The usual fortnightly social was held in the Wharenui School last Saturday, the large room being well filled. Air F. Comyns supplied the music, and Mr E. Hansen was M.C. During the evening Mrs Mahoney and Mr Shanks played extras. Mr and Mrs Hawthorne won the Boston Two-step, and Miss Harris and Mr Mitchell the Monte Carlo waltz. As advertised in this issue, the next social will be held at the school on July 13. TO JOIN THE CITY? A meeting was held recently of the committee set up to go into the matter of joining with Greater Christc-.iui oh The committee has held several meet ings, and collected a good deal of information. It has now been decied to defer further action until some time in October next, when a public meeting will be held and the information put before the ratepayers by* speakers for each side.
