WEST SPREYDON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting was held last Monday, there being present Mr R. Glover (chair), Messrs Higgins, Beer, Gaskell, Skelton, Cornish, and Clemens. The headmaster, Mr T. E. Eggleton, reported the roll number to be 214, and that the low average attendance of 189 was due in part to sickness. The distribution of hot drinks was running very smoothly. It was decided to sup port the resolution from the Canterbury School Committees’ Association relative to dental clinics, and to allow the Spreydon Presbyterian Church the use of the school as a Sunday school at a nominal charge. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Saddicr for his donation to the school funcL It was decided to record in the min utes the committee's appreciation to Mr A. Iliggins lor his successful negotiations with the Gas Company for the installation of gas into the school. JOTTINGS. The building permits issued for Spreydon for June were the same as last year, but the values show a slight increase, the figures being: June, 1928, ten permits, value £4367; June, 1929, ten permits, value £5182. Postal notes are now obtainable at the Spreydon Post Office, Simeon Street. The committee of the Spreydon Public Library report satisfactory pro gress since the opening night. The number of books on the shelves is now 1150. Several gifts of books have been donated by residents of the district. PERSONAL. Mrs F. J. Beer, of Athelston Street, Spreydon, returned last Thursday from an extended holiday in the North Island. Mrs J. J. Brightmore and her daughter, of Tainui Street, Spreydon, leave to-night for the North Island. ADDINGTON BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. Last Monday evening, in St Mary’s Schoolroom, the Aranui Burgesses’ Association met the Addington Burgesses’ Association in a cards match for the Reece Challenge Cup, Addington winning by 100 games to 90. Mi W. H. Griffiths welcomed the visitors. Mr R. Sprosen responding. PRESENTATIONS. On Friday afternoon Miss F. J. Petrie, who has resigned from the staff of the Addington School on account of her approaching marriage, was the recipient of presentations from the i hildren, the School Committee, and the teachers. On behalf of the children James Wornall presented Miss Petrie with a silver cream jug and sugar basin. Later Miss Petrie was entertained at afternoon tea, at which, ift addition to the staff, there was a ••presentative gathering of the coni itiittee and their wives, and Mrs Hayman. Misses Beck and M’Kenzie ar>ci Mr H. Kennedy, former teachers of the school. Appreciative references to the good work Miss Petrie had done during the ten years she had been a member

of the school staff were made by the chairman of the School Committee (Mr W. Coote), Miss Bowden and the Lea.’ master (Mr D. M. Shirlaw). On behalf of the committee Mrs Thrower presented Miss Petrie with a crystal bowi and jug, and on behalf of the staff the headmaster presented her with a silver teapot and hot water jug. Miss Petrie suitably replied. WEST COAST RELIEF FUND. In the Selwyn Street Hall last Thurs day evening, the Social Committee ol , the Addington Burgesses’ Association held a most successful social and dance in aid of the West Coast relief fund Donations were given by Mr and Mrs F. Mathison, J. Campbell, C. Hudson, W. Simmons, Miss Gibson, Mrs Shendan, Mr and Mrs G. Burford. T. For syth, and the Oddfellows’ Lodge Committee. Novelty dance prizes were wen by Miss E. Anning and Miss Dempsey. The lucky competition winners were Mrs Cook, Mrs Parlane, Mr Anderson Mr Brightmore, Mr G. Clarke, and N. Reader. The secretary will hand over to the Mayor’s fund the sum of £ll 6s 3d as a result of the above gathering. Next Thursday’s social and dance is advertised in this issue. SOMERFIELD SCHOOL. The carnival dance in aid of school funds was held in Beckenham Hall on Tuesday night. The novelty dances were won by Miss Squire and Mr Hough (Monte Carlo), Miss Ham mersly and Mr Fergus (lucky spot) Other prizes were won by Mrs Hole and Mr Oakley. The music was supplied by Bettel’s orchestra. ADDINGTON LEAGUE SOCIAL CLUB. There was another good attendance at the weekly dance held in the Selwyn Street Mali by the Addington League Social Club, last Tuesday. The third heat of the fox-trot competition was held, also a Monte Carlo waltz, the latter being won by Miss Reid and Mr Corbett. The final for the fox-trot competition will take place next Tuesday. Next week’s dance is advertised in this issue, also the club social for injured players, in Dickens Street Hall, on Wednesday. SPREYDON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting was held on Monday; present—Messrs W. G. Smith, J. Bell, E. Hall, D. Bain, T. Coulter, J. Mackenzie, 11. Gunns. A motion of sympathy was passed in connection with the sudden death of Mrs Teape, sen. A deputation, consisting of Messrs J. Mackenzie, W. G. Smith, and D. Bain was appointed to wait on the Hospital Board with respect to dental treatment. The circular received from the Canterbury School Committees’ Association, on dental services, was approved, and delegates w r ere instructed on the matter. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Bain for his action in having a gas boiler fitted to the infants’ room. The head master reported the roll number was 224, and the average attendance 201. A start had been made | with serving cocoa during the lunch hour, the arrangements being carried out by Mr M’Farlane. It was decided that a letter be sent to the Educa-

BAPTIST CHURCH, SPREYDON. l An enjoyable social evening was held: on Saturday evening last in the Baptist] Church Hall, by members of the Youngl People's Society. There was a good attendance, and the games, etc, were pre—] sided over by Mr Ken. Brown. ‘ The Church Chorus Choir will render special music each Sunday during the winter months, commencing to-morrow. Thanksgiving services will he held to—morrow for the recovery of the King to, health and strength. A collection will be taken at the morning and evening services in aid of the earthquake fund l U.A.O.D, i A.D. Brother R. U. Neill presided :it the meeting of the Perseverance Lodge on Monday. The D.P., Brother F. Smith, was present. A vote of sympathy and condolence was passed to the relatives of the late Brother Skinner, who was a. charter member, and the first to join the lodge. Brother Jones, \V‘arburton and Ealham were thanked for their eflorts in connection with the recent social. The D,P., Bro~ ther F. Smith, was congratulated on the manner in which he conducted the installation of officers. .\DDINGTON SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the r‘mnmit~ tee was held on Tuesday evening, Mr \V. ('oote presiding. There were also prmsmit: Mrs Thrower and Messrs Beardsley, Boocock. Fisk, Sloane, Hewitt, Sewell and Barnett. The head master‘s report stated that the attendance for the month had been satisfacory, the average daily attendance being 676. and that thirty—two swimming certificates had been gained by the pupils. The Education Board {on ' warded an application by Miss L. H. Dickinson, 8.A., for appointment as assistantmistress, and it was decided to approve of her appointment. It was decided to increase the committee’s subsidy to the dental clinic, in View of the increased number of children ‘ receiving attention. Correspondence was received from the School Commit- I tees’ Association. in regard to the pm» : vision of dental services at private ; schools, and it was decided to instruct ‘ the delegates to support the motion ‘ protesting against clinics being established in private schools until all the 1 State schools had been provided for.
