GOLF.

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. At the monthly meeting of the New Zealand Golf Council held this week, a resolution of sincere regret was passed at the death of Mr A. J. Abbott, which occurred in London last month. Mr Abbott was for some time a member of the council of this association, and had for very many years been one of the keenest supporters of the game in New Zealand. His death will be very greatly regretted by all who knew him. There were present at the meeting: —Sir Alexander Roberts (chairman, in the absence of Mr W. E. A. Gill, who was unable to attend), Messrs M. L Crombie, W. A. Kiely, A. D. S. Duncan and G. O. Sutton (secretary). A draf: programme of the 1929 cham pionship tournament, September 27 to October 5 (both inclusive), had been submitted by the Wanganui Golf Club and approxed of. The programme is much on the lines of last year’s, the first and second rounds in the play-off for the amateur championship being each eighteen holes and the subsequent rounds thirty-six holes. The Wanganui Golf Club advise that their president, Mr S. Powdrell, will donate a trophy to the winner of the amateur championship, and that their club will also give four miniatures to the winning team in the O’Rorke Vase teams' match. An additional match for professionals (a bogey handicap) has also been included in the programme, and the prize money for this is being provided by the Wanganui Golf Club. Another addition to the programme is a four-ball (best ball) bogey handi cap for amateurs, in addition to the foursome handicap, the latter to be played concurrently with the championship amateur foursome on the Monday of the tournament. The semifinal of the amateur championship this year will be played on the Thursday in stead of the Friday, so as to give the finalists a rest on the day immediately preceding the final. The programmes are to be distributed to the clubs with in the next week or two. In regard to the Kirk-Winder Cup matches, it was decided that the New Zealand team, which sails by the Maheno on July 19, arriving in Sydney on July 23, will leave for Melbourne on the following evening, and the secretary was directed to make the necessary arrangements regarding berths in the train from Sydney to Melbourne Entry forms for the Victorian State championship have been received from the four members of the team, and will be forwarded to Melbourne by the next mail. It was reported to the council that the Hutt Golf Club was putting on a special competition in connection with the qualifying rounds of their winter cup tournament on July IS, in which the five members picked for the KirkWindeyer team, Messrs Sloan Morpeth. T. H. Horton, A. D. S. Duncan. Dr Kenneth Ross and Mr J. L. Black, will be drawn against the five lowest handicap players who enter for the tournament, and the Hutt club will provide a special scratch prize to be played for by these ten players. The council heartily approved of the arrangements made by the Hutt club. Forth coming tournaments advised to the association are as follows:—Rotorua, August 27 to 30 (inclusive); Takapau, August 29 (ladies), 30 and 31 (men); Dannevirke, August 1,2 and 3; Napier, September 3 to 6 (inclusive) ; Waipukurau, September 5, 6 and 7; Harewood (North Canterbury golf championship), September 14 and 15; 1
