Miss Muriel Hampton (Leeston) is at present staying with Mrs R. E. Hampton, Pendarves. Miss Alice Bentham has gone to Auckland to be associate general secretary of the Y.W.C.A. Mr and Mrs Hadfield (Shirley) and Miss Dawe are at the Hydro Grand, Timaru. Dr Eleanor Baker M’Laglan and Nurse Atkinson, of the Health Department, are visiting the Geraldine district. Mr and Mrs J. W. Fair, of Timaru, are spending a few days in Christchurch and are staying at Warwick House. Miss Corinne Ogston (England), who has been the guest of Mrs W. Kain (Geraldine) is now with friends in Christchurch. The engagement is announced of Ailsa Carol, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs G. P. Purnell, of Fendalton, to Norton Leonard, youngest son of Mr and Mrs S. Hadfield, of Opawa.

The Dean and Chapter have issued invitations to the dedication and opening of the new buildings at the Cathedral School to-day, at 2.30 p.m., by Bishop West-Watson. Dr D. E. Hansen and Dr F. V. Bevan-Brown will also speak at the ceremony. An enjoyable social evening was spent by members of the St John Ambulance Brigade in their rooms recently, when a large number from the various nursing and ambulance divisions and a good many friends attended. Mrs Price (piano) and Miss M'Glashan (violin) supplied the music for several dances. Songs were given by Messrs J- Y. Wilson and W. Ashcroft. The supper arrangements were in the hands of the Girl Guides’ nursing division. The opening night of the lanthe Private Dance Club held in the Jellicoe Hall on Saturday night, was very successful. The hal! was tastefully decorated, the predominating colour being green. The same colour scheme, with the help of autumn flowers, helped to brighten the supper room. About eighty couples danced to spirited music supplied by Carson’s orchestra. A lucky spot waltz and a Monte Carlo fox-trot added to the evening’s enjoyment. On Saturday an enjoyable afternoon was spent at the residence of Mrs F. Smart, 59, St Asaph Street, the occasion being the fourth birthday of her great grand-daughter, Margery Semb. Musical items, songs and recitations were given by the young folk. Those present included: Stan. Petrie, Eileen and Dorothy Bishop, Joe and Frank Leigh, Margery, Dot and Joan Semb, Daphne Purdie, Douglas Quirk, Nola Atwood, E. and M. Henshall, T. and C. Dilks, Mesdames Quirk, Smart (2), Kilgour, Barnett, Attwood, Semb, Petrie, Bradford, and Bishop; Messrs L. Bradford and W. Smart. A gift evening was given by Mrs G. G. Croft on Saturday, at her home in Loburn, in honour of Miss Nellie Chambers, who is to be married shortly. The bride-elect was the recipient of many useful gifts. The evening was spent in games, music and competitions. Amongst those present were: Mr and Mrs G. T. Croft, Mrs Chambers, Misses N. Chambers, E. Kirk, U. Croft, D. Hills (Rangiora), M. Montgomery, N. Henry, S. Hughey, M. Croft, E. Bruere, E. Galletly, O. Croft, Messrs A. Kirk, Croft (4), B. Cook, T. Hassel, H. Henry, C. Hiatt, J. Blunden, G. Morris, Galletly (3), B. Kirk and J. Montgomery. At her home in Fifield Terrace, Opawa, on Saturday evening, Mrs R. E. Joughin was hostess at a gift evening in honour of Miss Frances Hews, whose marriage takes place on Wednesday. The evening was spent in games and dancing. Those present included: Mr and Mrs W. C. Joughin, Mr and Mrs A. W. Cornwell, Mr and Mrs C. Snelling, Mr and Mrs Partridge, Mr and Mrs Wicks, Mr and Mrs Reader; Mesdames Hay and Dillimore, Misses F. and B. Hews, F. Joughin, D. Wpodham, Hay, M. Keast, Q. Joughin, S. Joughin, N. Joughin, C. Joughin, K. Joughin, and Dillimore; Messrs A. Hawkins, F. Robertson, H. Joughin and L. Sharman. The Darfield Memorial Hall was recently the scene of a successful “ Bring and Buy ” afternoon in aid of the radio fund for the Darfield Hospital. The promoters were Mesdames D. M’Miilan, J. H. Jarman, C. E. Reid and Sister Sim, and they were assisted by a willing band of workers from all parts of the Malvern district. The produce, cake and work stalls were well patronised, and the stallholders were kept busy. Practically everything was sold, and a good sum was raised towards the wireless set which it is hoped to install in the hospital during the winter months. For the same fund, a bridge drive, organised by Mesdames C. E. Reid, Leo Morrison and H. Edbrooke, was held at the residence of Dr C. E. Reid, Darfield.

At the monthly meeting of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children, the Rev C. Perry presided, in the absence of the president (the Rev C. A. Fraer). There were also present the following members of the committee: Mesdames J. Blackaby, T. Tomlinson, Adj. Combs, Miss L. Tabart, Revs D. Gardner-Miller, P. Revell, F. Rule, Mr C. R. N. Mackie and the secretary (Miss Car dale). Apologies for absence were received from the Revs C. A. Fraer and W. Baumber, Mesdames F. Biltcliff, T. D. Taylor, J. C. Pairman and Mr J. A. S. Wait (hon treasurer). It was reported that the street collection was only half of what was collected last year, this was owing partly to the weather conditions. The treasurer reported that donations were coming in well and that Miss de Veaux was doing good work. The secretary reported 226 miscellaneous, 139 visits paid and 349 callers at the office had been attended to.

Mrs Henry Harper, Waimate, is visiting her sister, Mrs Nedwill. Mrs Willes is retiming to England by the Remuera. Miss Essie Owles has returned from Dunedin, where she was staying with Mrs Oscar Owles. Miss Isabel Rutherford is staj'ing with her sister, Mrs J. S. Williams, Heaton Street. Mrs and Miss Ceda Bell, of Lismore, have taken up their residence in Nayland Street, Sumner. The Misses Muriel and Elsie Kidner, visitors from England, are guests at Warwick HouseJ Mr and Mrs D. Rowe (Lawrence) are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs A. L. Temple (Waipiro Bay) are guests at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs G. L. Rutherford have taken a house at Sumner for the winter months. Miss Mary Barker (Winchester) is the guest of her aunt, Mrs George Helmore. Mr and Mrs A. Hadfield and Miss J. S. Dawe (Christchurch) are guests at the Hydro Grand Hotel. Mr and Mrs J. W. Fair (Douglas Street) left yesterday to spend a few days in Christchurch. Mrs Henry Harper (“Grassy Hills,’’ Waimate), is the guest of her sister, Mrs Nedwill (Christchurch). Miss Joan Hargreaves (Kakahu), who spent the week-end at Oamaru with Mrs Arthur Nichols (Kuriheka), returned home yesterday.

Miss Janet Studholme (“ Te Waimate”), who spent the week-end at “ The Croft,” Park Lane, with Mrs R. L. Orbell, returned home Yesterday.

Miss Alison Johnston (Wellington) will be the guest of Miss Knubley (Sarah Street) for the races and the Jockey Club ball. Mr and Mrs J. C. Guinness (" Farmleigh,” Ealing) will be the guests of Mrs W. W. Cartwright (Orbell Street) for the Jockey Club races and ball. Miss Corine Ogston (England), who was the guest of Mrs W. Kain (Geraldine) motored to Christchurch on Sunday. Mr and Mrs G. I. Hamilton (“ Roselle,” Orari) will leave some time this week for Australia, where they will remain for a few months. Miss Buchanan and Miss Agnes Buchanan (Christchurch) will stay at “Roselle” during their absence.

Mrs A. S. Elworthy’s guests for the Jockey Club races and ball this week will include:—Captain and Mrs N. A. Rattray (Waimate), Colonel and Mrs R. Neill (“ Barossa”), Mr Maurice Hope (Blenheim) and Mr Edward El worthy (Four Peaks).

Mrs V. E. Hitchings (Te Kuiti) was the guest of honour at a bridge party on Saturday night, given for her by Mrs A. H. Muir at her home in Sarah Street. Mrs Muir wore a frock of black lace and georgette, and Mrs Hitchings’s frock of chenille was amber-col oured. In the drawing-room honey-col-oured chrysanthemums made charming decorations, and the supper table was effectively arranged with antirrhinums in shades of pink. Mrs C. H. LeCren was the hostess at a delightful dance at her home in Grey Road on Saturday night in honour of her daughter Margaret’s birthday. Mrs LeCren received her guests wearing a frock of black lace and georgette lightened by touches of gold; Miss Margaret LeCren’s charming frock of deep wine-red taffeta was full, and had flowers appliqued on it in gold. Miss Betty LeCren wore a frock of soft georgette in shades of orange, ochre and flame colour. The rooms were arranged with chrysanthemums of every shade.
