KAIAPOI’S ROADS ARE INSPECTED BY DISTRICT ENGINEER.

Mr F. Langbein, District Engineer, Public Works Department, visited Kaiapoi yesterday afternoon, and, with members of the Kaiapoi Borough Council, made an inspection of the main highway through the borough with a view to drawing up plans and specifications for the permanent paving < 1 the road. An inspection was also made, of the main traffic bridge, of which it is proposed to widen the roadway by about eight feet bv building a footway* outside the present structure.

The suggestion of the Borough Council representatives that the road from the Railway to Sewell Street be tarsealed from the concrete paving to the curb met with Mr Langbein’s approval. Mr Langbein stated that the phesent roadway would need to be lowered, at an estimated average of fifteen inches. He recommended that, as the adjacent local bodies were paving in concrete, the borough construct their portion of the road in the same material. He. suggested that the corner fronting Mr Livingstone’s property* be rounded by setting back the fence line ten feet. Regarding the main bridge, Mr Langbein suggested that the footway be cantilevered outside the present structure on the down-stream side. The path on the up-stream side to be pro tected with a pipe rail and netting fence.
