Reference to the death of Mr Walter Bethune was made by several speakers at the annual meeting of the Wellington College Old Boys’ Association When moving the adoption of the annual report, the president (Dr J. Elliott) said:—“The association received a staggering blow in the death of Walter Bethune, who, without making any invidious distinctions, was preeminently the old boy of Wellington College and was looked upon as an example of what any boy attending the school should be. There is no doubt that a memorial will be put up in the school in his memory,” concluded the president. Other speakers also agreed with the suggestion that a suitable memorial should be erected to the late Mr Bethune.

The Rev Dr F. E. Brown has intimated to the council of the Geelong Grammar School of his intention to retire from the headmastership of the school at the end of this year, or as soon after as his successor is able to take up the duties of his office. For some time past his health has not been good. Dr Brown, who before his appointment was the head master of Preston Grammar School, England, began his duties as head master of the school at the commencement of 1912, at a time when the school buildings were in Geelong. On April 3, 1913, the foundation stone of the school buildings at Corio was laid, and at the commencement of 1914 the new school buildings were opened. During the eighteen years that he has guided the destinies of the school, its advancement has been most marked. Since the beginning of 1912 the number of boarders attending the school has trebled, and under Dr Brown’s headmastership a high standard of work has been attained. It was with great regret the council of the school reluctantly accepted Dr Brown’s resignation. Dr Brown, when relieved of his duties, will, return to England.
