Conditions were ideal yesterday afternoon for the match between teams representing “ The Girl Friend ” Company and the Combined Press Club, and after an enjoyable game the theatrical players sustained defeat by S 5 runs on the first innings. Batting first, “ The Girl Friend ” team was dismissed for the small total of 47 runs (T. le Brun 15 and H. Short 12). After the opening batsmen had reached their opponents’ score the Pressmen set a merry pace and quickly ran up 132 (A. Woodward 23, J. Mahoney, retired. 19, Stonerfian, retired, 16, N. Archer 16, C. Haase, retired, 15. and K. Thomson 15). N. Archer, three ’wickets for 11 runs; W. P. Guiney, two for 1; C. Haase, two for 5; W. J. Rudduck, two for 6, and D. Webb, one for 6. bowled well for the winners, while for the losers R. Steyne took two wickets for 18 runs, T. le Brun two for 38. 11. Short one for 15, and D. Pranklyn one for 32.
