KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING

The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held last night; present—the Mayor (Mr H. C. Revell) and Councillors E. J. Pollard, J. D. Williams, F. Thorne, A. Linklater, W. 11. A. Vickery and R. J.. Dunn. Permission was granted the Christchurch Regatta Club to erect signs at the main bridge advertising the regatta on January 26. The honorary secretary of the Sanders Cup Contest Committee wrote asking if the council would grant a donation towards the expenses of this year’s contest, to be held at Akaroa during February. The letter was received. The honorary secretary of the Kairaki Less'ees’ Association wrote drawing the attention of the council to the condition of Featherstone Avenue, and asked if the road could be put in order in view of the approaching holiday traffic. The letter was received, and the action of the Works Committee in having the work done was approved. The Hon D. Buddo wrote thanking the. council for its letter of appreciation of his<*services to the borough, and expressing pleasure at the cordial relations that had always existed in his association with the councils for the past thirty years. The secretary of the Kaiapoi Fire Board wrote advising that, after consideration of the lease of the fire station buildings, it was the wish of the board that the rent be reduced from £3OO to. £225 per annum under the same conditions as formerly, the reduction to date from April 1, 1929. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee for a report. The secretary of the Kaiapoi Fire Board wrote with reference to repairs required to the Fire Brigade buildings, and also drew attention to the danger of fire due to the burning of rubbish at the rear of certain business premises. The board considered that Messrs Blackwells, Ltd., should be given notice to have the danger removed. It was decided to do the repairs asked for, and that Messrs Blackwells, Ltd., should be asked to observe the borough by-laws in regard to the disposal of rubbish. The sanitary inspector wrote recommending that a drainlaver’s license be granted to Mr R. S. Ayers for the period ending December 31, 1929. The letter was received. The Pines Beach Association was granted the use of the council’s mower, and a request for a ranger to be on duty on Boxing Day was granted. The Finance Committee reported receipts £253 15s 2d, and debit balance £1631 ISs sd. Accounts amounting to £lO4 5s 3d were passed for payment.
