UNITED SERVICE OF INTERCESSION AT CATHEDRAL.

Special prayers for the King’s recovery from his illness were offered at a united service of intercession held in the Cathedral at 12.5 p.m. to-day. There was a large congregation. Theservice was conducted by the Rev John Miller, Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery, who read the fortysixth psalm (“ The Lord is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble ”), and verses 19 and 20 from the eighteenth chapter of the Gospel of St Matthew. There was a period of silent prayer, after which the officiating minister offered up a general prayer. He said in part:— “ O, Father in Heaven, we have none other prayer than that of the publican of old—‘ O Lord, have mercy upon us! ’ Hear the supplication of Thy people when we pray for our most gracious King. We do not understand why Thou hast caused him to go through this- serious illness, • but we know that Thou art too wise to err. We thank Thee for his life and character, and pray that he may be spared long to reign over us.” The general prayer was followed by the Lord’s Prayer and benediction. To-morrow a service will be conducted by Dean Julius.
