Ship designers appear to be devoting considerable attention to the idea of streamline stern-frames, writes the “ Syren and Shipping.” Not long ago it was stated that one new vessel built on the Clyde, and fitted with such plates on her rudder post, thus abolishing the resistance of that post and directing the flow of water from the propeller past each side of the rudder, was estimated to give an increased speed on trials of a quarter of a knot. It was added that, two existing ships—a City and an Anchor liner—had been, or were being, fitted with similar plates. The latest news of the same kind lias reference to the cargo steamer Uskmouth, of 4500 tons dw., launched on August 2, by the Burntisland Shipbuilding Com-

pany for the Uskside Steamship Company, of Newport (Mon.). This vessel, which has triple expansion engines of .1380 i.h.p., hy Messrs David Rowan and Co., Glasgow, has a stern-frame constructed on the Ayre patent streamline form. The loaded speed trials were run under exactly the same conditions as those of the previous sister-ship Uskport, built by the same firm, with the same displacement, power, and number of revolutions, and they showed a gain of from a quarter to half a knot at different speeds under sea-going conditions.
