CHRISTCHURCH CLUB.

Life Members’ Cup. The combined fleets of the Christchurch Sailing and Power Boat Club sailed the first of the annual series for the Life Members’ Cup on Saturday. Dottrell finishing the winner after her skipper had nearly lost the race, though making a mistake in the course. The race was a very closely-contested one, and provided the best sport members have had this year. The light southerly wind gave just sufficient air for pleasant sailing. Messrs R. Gormack (starter) and J. M’Grath (time-keeper) were in charge. At the start Seamcw was on the line, ‘followed over by Naomi and Te Arai.

Dottrell quickly flew out of the bunch and headed the leader, taking the fleet round the first buoy. At the tripod Playmate and Seamew lay second and third. Going up to Skylark Island Te Arai began to move up. and at the end of the first time up the creek the order was: Dottrell, Te Arai, Playmate, Seamew, Gazelle, with the rest all very close. On returning to the. tripod the second time Dottrell took the wrong course and set off for home, not discovering her mistake until Te Aral, lying second, had turned the mark and taken the Avon course. Te Arai attempted to hoist a spinnaker, but the wind was in the wrong quarter, and she lost time. Clearing the tripod the last time Dottrell overtook the scratch boat and led her home by lmin 42sec. The times were as follows: h. m. s.

* Did not finish. This race also completed the Life Members' Cup series for last season, Te Arai being the winner. Cornwell Cup. A meeting of the executive of the Christchurch Sailing Club on Saturday night selected the following boys to be the club’s representative crew in the Cornwell Cup contest: —George Cotton (skipper), George Allen, and Eric Morrison (emergency skipper). The telegraphic challenge which the club entered has been legalised by placing a formal challenge in the hands of the secretary of the association. sis: si Disqualification.. In the A class race on December S Hpia forced a passage between a mark and another boat, viz.. Seagull. Site was therefore disqualified. Loose Ends. G. G. Andrews is a great believer in the maxim of “the better the day, the better the deed.” It is seldom that a Sunday sees him idle; and last Sunday he was tearing into the construction of yet another hydroplane shell. This is a Speedboy model, with the novelty of being jointed for travelling. The front portion comes off, and packs neatly inside the rear part, so that the shell occupies very little space when packed. This novel boat will travel south to Dunedin and Stewart Island when George takes his holidays. K Sf K The evolution of the estuary is becoming more easily seen as the weeks go by. Below the tripod buoy, the Brighton channel now carries the greater part of the water, and is navigable at low tide. This is not the case over by Redcliffs. It is impossible to enter the head of Monck’s Bay at the bottom of the ebb, and there is no doubt that if the present movement continues the mooring channel will soon be blind.

x si si A. T. Round has sold Tui. On Sunday morning he set out with a crew of boys and sailed her round to Lyttelton for the new owner. Over at Diamond Harbour she met Iranui, and the pair had a race over to the port, “Aub” skippering Iranui, and making up a good deal of the start which he gave the smaller boat. Fixtures.
