Mrs Sholto Douglas (Ethelton) is at W arner's Hotel. Mr and Mrs J. Paton (Domett) are at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs C. G. Judson, of Cust, spent the week-end with friends in Spnngston South. Mrs H. J. Baliin, Leinster Road, will return to Christchurch to-day from n ellington. and Mrs A. Gray, Wellington, are visitors to Christchurch and are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr G. A. Williamson and Miss Jean Williamson, San Francisco, are visitors to. Christchurch, and are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mrs H. T. Little, Hawarden, Miss N. White, Hawarden, and Mrs S. E. Campbell, Wellington, arrived in’Christchurch this morning and are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Captain and Mrs M. Buckley have returned to Christchurch from Palmerston North, where they were married last week. They will leave for the West Coast in a day or two. Staying at the United Service Hotel are:—Mr and Mrs W. Doig (Oamaru), Mrs R. Acton-Adams and Miss A. Ac-ton-Adams (Dunedin), Mrs R. M. Hall (Greymouth) and Mr and Mrs E. C. Duncan (Shanghai). A successful garden party was held at Mr Ladbrook’s residence at Redcliffs on Saturday afternoon. The Redcliffs Presbyterian Church should benefit cbnsiderably from the brisk selling at the various variety, ice-cream, cake and sweets stall. The latest arrivals at the Hotel Federal include:—Mr H. Napier (Wellington), Mr M. Summers (Winton), Mr E. S. Ryland (Wellington), Mr G. W. Leslie, Mr W. J. Leslie, Mr A. J. Leslie Mr J. R. Bruce (Timaru), Mrs M. L. West (Fairlie). Mr and Mrs Gough, Glenavy, were entertained at a social in the hall on Friday night prior to their departure for Christchurch. Mr Gough has been stationmaster in Glenavy for the past eight years, and is now taking a position at the Christchurch railway station. He was the recipient of a purse of notes, and all wished him and Mrs Gough good luck in their new home. On Saturday evening, the Orange Hall at Hornby was filled to its full capacity, when a carnival dance was held. The hall was tastefully decorated with greenery and crepe streamers. A number of novelty dances were held. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M’Gurr and partner, while the lucky spot one-step was awarded to Miss Gallagher (Christchurch) and partner. A dainty supper was handed round. Music was supplied by Miss Mary Nolan's - orchestra. Extras were played by Miss M. Fahey (Islington) and Mr Woods (Sockburnh On Saturday evening, in the Cashmere Masonic Hall, a concert arranged by Mr R. S. H. Buchanan in aid of the school prize fund was greatly appreciated by the large audience present. The programme consisted of songs by Misses Khura Ilart-Stewart, Helen Leithead, Barbara Buchanan and Messrs E. Rogers and R. S. H. Buchanan ; recitations by Miss lona Mackay; solo dance by Miss Edna Gill, and ballets by her pupils; violin solo by Miss May Draper, with trio accompaniment: a comedy by the Cashmere Methodist Girls’ Club; and humorous songs skilfully interpreted by Mr George Titchener. The soloists were fortunate in having the services of Miss Lillian Harper as accompanist. Mr and Mrs Cecil Newman gave a delightful party at their home, Albany Street, on Saturday afternoon, in honour of the sixth birthday of their eldest daughter Joyce. The guests were entertained with games and dancing on the lawn, and their joy was unbounded at the sight of a real party tea. The dining-room was prettily decorated with coloured streamers, and the large birthday cake, with its six candles and six kewpies, was cut by the small guest of honour. Paper hats and balloons in charming variety added to the jollity of the occasion. The children present were:—Joyce Newman, Peggy Burn, Bernice Sharlick, Natalie Grover. Nancy and Betty Campbell, Patsy and Kathleen Stratford, Noelline Eaton, Joan Foggan, Betty Brien, Elaine Watson and Raynor Newman, Masters Billy Greer, Georgie Jack, Rex Grover, Peter Thomas, Noel Watson, Bernie and Maurice Stratford, Rodney Sharlick and Don Greer.

Miss J. Nathan (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs O. T. J. Alpers, Fendalton. Mr and Mrs David Friedlander and family will spend the holidays at Timaru. Miss Ruth Haggitt has returned from Dunedin to spend the holidays with her parents at St Mary’s Vicarage, Merivale. Miss Maude Nichols (Merivale) is leaving to-night for a visit to Wellington. Mrs G. D. Greenwood, Cranmer Square, is leaving for Wellington, en route to Auckland, where she will attend the summer race meeting. Miss Joan Hislop, Wellington, ■who recently returned from abroad, is the guest of Mrs C. Cooper, Innes Road. The engagement is announced of Janet Mabel, eldest daughter of Mrs and the late Marmaduke John Dixon, of “Eyrewell,” West Eyreton, Canterbury, and Arthur Darvall, eldest son °f Mr and Mrs J. A. Poulton, “Clovelly,” Sumner. Visitors staying at View Brae, Han* mer Springs, during the week-end were*. Miss G. M’lntyre, Miss J. Metzer, Mrs Walker, Mr and Mrs J. Johnston and child, Miss L. Keand, Mr Hall, Mr Dalzell, Mrs Templeton, Miss Payne (Christchurch), Mr Louseley (Dunedin), Mr H. S. The annual banquet of the Addington Methodist Mothers’ Union was held in the schoolroom on Wednesday, and was very: largely attended. Items were given by Mesdames Fletcher, Ansel], Mackie, Nuttell and Streetly and the Misses Carey, Elene Hore, Marjory Trevor, Smith, Joan Butcher and Victor Thomas. Addresses were given by Mrs Burley, Mrs Liversedge. Sister Jean and Mrs Butcher. Presentations were made to Mrs. Burley (president), Mrs Liversedge and Mrs Chapman (vicerpresidents), Mrs M’Allaster (treasurer), Mrs A. E. Butcher (secretary), and ' the Rev A. Liversedge (vicepresident) and suitable responses were made by the recipients. The singing of the Doxology concluded a very enjoyable evening.
