FRESH OUTBREAK OF SCARLET FEVER.
FOURTEEN CASES SINCE SATURDAY. After a lull lasting several days, there has bepn a recrudescence of the scarlet fever epidemic, fourteen cases having been notified between noon on Saturday and noon to-day. Six of these cases were notified yesterday, and eight to-day, ten being in the Christchurch metropolitan area. The details of the new cases are as follow:—Metropolitan area: Sydenham 2, Linwood 1, Spreydon 1, St Martins 1, Woolston 1. Waimairi County 2, Riccarton Borough 1, Lyttelton Borough 1. Other districts: Levels County 1, Timaru Borough 1, Kaiapoi Borough 1, Duller County 1. During the week ended at noon on Monday thirty-five cases of scarlet fever were notified in the Canterbury district, compared with 33 in the previous week. No cases were notified on the West Coast in either week, but one has since been notified in the Buller County. It was hoped that the epidemic was definitely on the wane, but the large number of cases notified since Saturday is an indication that it is not yet over. The total number of cases of infectious disease of all types notified in the Canterbury and West Coast districts in the week ended at noon on Monday was 5.5, compared with 57 in the previous week. Details of the notifications are as follow’:
One death from diphtheria occurred on the West Coast last week and two deaths from tuberculosis in Canterbury.
