PROTECTION WANTED FOR LOCAL GROWERS OF CHEERIES AND APRICOTS.

The monthly meeting of the Christchurch Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Association was held on Saturday night, Mr <J. Fineran presiding over a fair attendance. It was ultimately decided to write to the auctioneers at Invercargill with a view to having the carrying of fruit on the expresses reinstated. It was pointed out that under the present swstem much time was wasted in transshipment. A letter from the Fruitgrowers' Federation asked if .January 23 would he a suitable date for the association’s conference, pointing out that the federation was holding Its conference on January 24. The chairman said that the federation had already been notified that that date would be suitable. Following on a letter from the Railway Department, the chairman stressed the fact that it was urgent that fruit should be taken to the sheds at the railway bv 7.30 p.m.. no later. The Department's letter stated that fruit could be carried to Invercargill by the 10.30 p.m. express on Sunday. December 23 < fruit, to he delivered at the Christchurch platform dock by 6 p.m.), and to Dunedin by a night goods train leaving at 10.30 p.m. on December 23 (fruit to be delivered at goods yard loading hank not later Ilian 8 p.m.). After some discussion, it was deParliament. asking them to support any proposals for protection of local cherries, apricots and other fruits.
