Mrs Guy Ronalds has returned to Lyttelton from Timaru. Miss May Andrew, Cashmere, will leave on Wednesday evening for AuckMrs Clarkson, who is the guest of Mrs H. East, Papanui Road, will leave for Dunedin on Wednesday. Mrs Maurice Louisson, Shirley, will leave at the end of the week for Auckland. Mrs E C. Taylor. Edgeware Road, has returned to Christchurch after a month s holiday in the North Island. Mr and Mrs E. B. Newton returned to Ashburton from Christchurch on Saturday. Mr and Mrs A. L. Wall (Wellington) left Christchurch yesterday for HanMiss Majorie Owen. Rossa!' Street, has left for the north on a visit to Mrs Yickeridge. Ilawera Mr and Mrs E. J. Chennells, Feudalton. will leave this week for Aran, where they will be the guests of Mrs Godfrey Rutherford. Mr and Mrs Yon Dadelzen. Havelock North, arrived in Christchurch on Saturdav morning and are staying at arner’s Hotel. Mr and Mrs W. Symons and Miss T. Svmons, Morven. accompanied by Mrs Fairbairn, Kirwee, left on Saturday for Petone, to attend the wedding of Miss L. Symons. Slr and Mrs T. F. Gold (London), Mrs C. W. Melville (Wellington) and Mr and Mrs F. W. Griggs (Herts England) are at the United Service Hohel. Mr and Mrs A. Lawrence Gee (Timaru) and Mr and Mrs J. Zachanah (Wellington) are at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs Rudall Hayward (Auckland), and Mr and Mrs A. M. Jeavons (Dunedin), are staying at Warner's Hotel. Miss Naomi Whalley, Wellington, who sang the soprano solos .in The Messiah ” on Saturday evening, was the guest of Mr and Mrs W. Machin, of Deans Avenue, over the week-end. Many ladies attended the first day of the New Brighton Trotting Club's summer meeting held on Saturday. The weather was ideal. The racing was exciting. and enjoyed by the large number present. Many pretty summer frocks and shady hats made their appearance. Latest arrivals at the Hotel Federal include: —Mr and Mrs Carter, Mr M. F. Turner (Wellington), Miss G. A. Milne, Mr B. S. Webb (Auckland), Mr M. H. Gregory (Invercargill), Mr Cecil Webber (Timaru). Mr E. Brennan (Sydney), Miss Dorothy Paine (Milwaukee, U.S.A.), Dr Olga Glov (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs C. M’Kenzie, Messrs A. and J. H. Budge, Mr S. B. Woodley (Oamaru), Mrs Smith (Geraldine), Mrs H. R. Burrell, Mr W. G. Short. Mr Rudall Hayward (Wellington), Miss A. Paul, Mr J. W. Burtenshaw (Auckland). A large and appreciative audience attended the performance of “ The Messiah ” in the Municipal Concert Hall, by the Harmonic Society, on Saturday evening. The soloists for the evening were Miss Naomi Whalley and Miss Dorothy Spiller. Miss Whalley wore a distinctive gown of pale blush pink tulle mounted on taffetas, with pastelshaded embroidered motifs on the skirt, and wide tulle bows on the shoulder and one side of the waistline. Her cloak of deep ivory- ring velvet was lined with silver tissue. Miss Spiller wore a simply designed frock of cameo pink georgette, the neckline, waist and hem outlined with bead embroideries.

Mesdames F. F. Davidson and S. Beehag were the hostesses at a delightful gift evening recently in honour of Miss W. Merritt, who is to be married this month. The home of Mr and Mrs F. G. Mortimer, Blake Street, South Brighton, was kindly lent for the occasion. The large dining-room was tastefully decorated with streamers and flowers. The evening was spent in dancing, games and competitions. The competitions were won by Miss F. Mortimer and Mr T. Forrester. Musical numbers were given by Mesdames Davidson and Beehag. Miss Pringle and Mr W. Cotton. A feature of the evening was the opening of the many gifts by Miss Merritt and Mr A. Yarrall. Those present included :—Mesdames Davidson, Beehag, Merritt, Yarrall, Forrester, Sholders, Mortimer and Trainor, Misses Pringle, Hathaway, Mortimer, M'lntosh, Hunter, Blaze}-. Yarrall and Hatfield, Messrs Merritt (2), Yarrall, Davidson. Beehag. Mortimer, Forrester (2), Sholders, Cotton, Forsyth, Barker and Pringle.

Mr and Mrs W. Tebay. of Rookwood Avenue, will be spending 4'hristmas with their daughter, Mrs Sellars, of Upper Hutt, Wellington. Mrs G. D. Greenwood. Cranmer Square, is leaving for Wellington, en ’route to Auckland, where she will attend the summer race meeting. Miss May Speirs. New Zealand lady tennis champion, will go north on Wednesday to defend her title at Auckland. Miss Melva Wake, Canterbury’s second lady, who is partnering her in the will also go north on Wednesday. A successful garden party was held at Mr Ladbrook’s residence at Redcliffs' on Saturday afternoon. The Redcliffs Presbyterian Church should benefit considerably from the brisk selling at the various variety, ice-cream, cake and sweets stall. Miss Airini Partridge, late of Sumner, was honoured at a handkerchief shower by Mrs T. R. Barfitt and Mrs A. C. O. Allen, joint hostesses, on the occasion of her approaching marriage, and a very pleasant function held in Bealey Avenue, Christchurch, resulted in many beautiful donations. Those present included: Mrs G. F. Allen, Mrs Burns (Sumner), Mrs E. A. Johnson and Mrs E. Murray, Misses M. W. Allen, P. Smith, D. Seager, M. Fleming, B. Browne and R. and M. Allen. On Saturday afternoon, December 15. at “Geronga,” Sherbourne Street, St Albans, an afternoon kitchen party was given by Miss Ludbrook in honour of Miss C. Magon, who is to be married early next month to Mr S. Birch, of Lincoln. Many useful presents were received, and the afternoon was spent with music and a competition, which was won by Miss E. M’Kee. Musical items were given by Mrs W. H. Ford, Miss F. Tindall and Miss A. Whyte. Those present were: Mesdames Whyte, F. Fewings, W. Tindall, W. 11. Ford, and W. Gerard, Misses A. Whyte, G. Fuller, E. M’Kee, K. M’Kee, B. Edwards. H. Birch, F. Tindall and C. Magon.
