FINED FOR USING RIFLE ON LAKE.

Edward Chalken was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day that on June 25 he killed native game with a rifle <~n Lake Ellesmere. Mr M. J. Gresson, who appeared for the Acclimatisation Society, said that Chalken was the principal witness in a case heard a fortnight ago in which a man named Miller was fined for the same offence. Miller, after the case, '.aid an information against Chalken. Charles Albert Miller said on the day in question Chalken rowed him and another man out to their maimais and then went on to a fence where he was shooting for two hours. William Miller, the third member of the party, said he remembered the da)' but could not remember if Chalken used a rifle. Chalken was fined £1 and costs.
